How I built my Cloud

Hello All,
Just wanted to share my latest DIY project. I built this cloud using birchwood (light and firm). ITs 6' 1/2 x 9' 3/4 . It has 2 layers of 1" owens 703 filling each grid. I covered it with acoustic cloth. It has helped tremedously with the sound in the room. TIghtet and more accurate imaging. It took about 2 days. Completely worth it.

enjoy

I like these threads. Thank you for the pics and the post.

When I upgraded my home gear a couple years ago, I was determined to seriously upgrade the quality of my tracks done at home. One morning I felt the urge to make myself some nice portable baffles, so I went immediately to Home Depot for materials, then to the fabric store. I have pretty good carpentry skills, and I thought I had a good idea for building these really tall 2-panel things that were attatched with hinges, so I could fold them all the way up (doubling the absorption), or use them at any angle between folded up and all the way open at 180 degrees). Well, I spent way more $$ than I had planned, took the stuff to the garage, and proceded to build these top-heavy monsters that needed a giant footprint to make them stable (a good firm shove would send them CRASHING to the ground). It turned out to be a huge waste of time and money.

Later, I discovered some simple plans on several online forums (including this one) that would have been a LOT easier and smarter.

Posts like this keep people from doing what I did!

Thank you. I do not have the best carpentry skills but with a little planning It came out much better than expected. I would be more than happy to help any one out with one of these.

hey patrick

Thank you for the compliment. I did not take any measurements. I had an acoustician measure the room and make recomendations. SInce installing it all I know is that Its amazing. I still have to treat the room with bass traps and 2 more diffusors, but so far it has made a world of difference.

THe lights are rigged to wiring. Heres how the build went

First I made the frame.
THen cut the fiber glass to fit the frame.
Then I hung the cloud.
Stapled the cloth to the frame
Added the trim would (already pre measured and painted)
Then Cut a whole through the fabric to run the lighting wire to the ceiling. (there used to be a fan in place of the cloud. Took the fan out and rewired the lighting fixture)
Screwed the fixture in.

I used birchwood for the frame...very light

best
