Apogee Mini-DAC vs Benchmark DAC

Please don't shoot me. I am looking for a good DAC to monitor out from ProTools LE.

I am just wondering if the difference is subtle between these two? I have heard Apogee converters many times but not Benchmark. Wondering if it is worth the $160 difference in price.

thanks
russell

Forget about both (and yes they are both great and you can't go wrong with either) and get a Lavry DA-10. You won't find a better (more accurate and natural sounding) DA for $1000 anywhere on the planet. Some Benchmark users have replaced them with the DA10.

Paired with some really good active speakers (ADAM A7? Dynaudio BM(x)a's ? = monitoring heaven.

Yep...I demo'd the benchmark and lavry. The lavry stayed.

The fatal flaw with the Lavry though is that you can't mute the speaker outs when you're using the headphone amp (which is an insane design decision IMO), means you have to switch your speakers off when you want to check your mixes on the 'phones, unfortunately this was a deal breaker for me between the Lavry and the Benchmark.

lavry vs apogee or benchmark

well, given that you cannot mute the monitors from the unit... i would count out the lavry for my use.

that said, is that an issue for the other 2?

also, i am planning on going SPDIF out of protools into the unit.

so far...

Apogee
+ spdif on back
- 1 headphone output

Benchmark
+ 2 headphone outputs
- no spdif on back. i would need a converter???

thoughts?

If your total cable length is less than 6 feet, or 2 meters, you can use a 110 ohm digital cable with an XLR connection on one end and RCA on the other. For total cable lengths over 6 feet, or 2 meters, you will need an impedance transformer, which I suggest getting the one made by Neutrik.

See them here.
