| Lives for gear | Valley People QLZ PREs (transamp preamps)...?
Hello. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me an indication of the quality and sound of the Valley People QLZ transamp PREs? I mean, they are soooo 'low cost' (cheap?) Can these suckers be taken seriously? I'd be ESPECIALLY interested if anyone could tell me how they stack against/compared to the Tascam FW-1884, built-in preamps! Here's the deal, I can get 8 of them prettyy cheap from this boards classifieds. I'm interested in using them on drums. I have an 8-mic drum setup and this is an 8 preamp rack. I've been using the PREs in my 1884 for drums. They are decent, discrete transistor preamps. But if these are better (somewhat significantly), I don't mind dropping the hundreds to get them. While you're at it, if you can tell me anything about the Valley People keepex comps and maxi-Q, that would be great information for me as well. THANKS!

Any one? I'd love to get some feedback before I spend the bux! I know I can always turn around and sell it if I don't care for it, but I'd like to know ahead of time. I wish I could audition some somewhere!

I was hoping someone who has used them (pres and eq) could give me a little indication of what kind of sound they have and I would ESPECIALLY love to hear from someone who has used this gear and the Tascam FW-1884. I would love to know how they compare/what the differences are/etc. Thanks for the reply! | |

Came across this really old thread. Not relevant to the original question now, but just incase anyone else ever comes across any of these and wants to know if they are any good or worth getting I decided to reopen it. I have a pair of these Valley People preamps in a rack that I have had for several years. They came out of an old broadcast console. I use them all the time. They are great. I don't have a Tascam firewire interface, but I do have Mackie onyx 400f, and the Valley pre's sound a lot more open and detailed than the stock pre's in the Onyx and compare very well with other preamps I use. Anyone else out there using them?
