Thread Starter | Audix D2 and D4 How do these suckers sound? How do they compare to the EV N/D468 or 421's? |

| I use them both(inside the toms) to me, they both reveal the sound source as though it really is. great mics and are physically very tough! money well spent! I prefer them to the 421's (which I also have) The audix seem to EQ cleaner in the mix, if that makes any sense? -klauth. |

| We've switched from the 421's to the D2 and D4. Much, much easier to deal with, and they sound every bit as good if not better. JSL |

| I've used them and I'm a big Audix fan but honestly, I loved the little clip on sennheisers much better. They're all great mics though. |

| I use D-2's on rack toms and D-4's on floor toms and love them. The "clean eq" statement is a very good one as they are very plyable if that makes any sense. They just seem to cut through and sound very big

Thread Starter | rock! how is the bleed? Smooth or trash canny like the 421? |

| Lives for gear | love D4 on toms D4 by audix. Get some and give them a try, I love them and I do think the sound a lot like 421's. D2 vs D4: To me the D2 sounds like a band passed D4. so... I'd rather have the full range out of the D4. |

| I like the Audix D2 and D4 mics, but I also love my MD421s! They all have their uses, depending on the kit/song/style/drummer...blah...blah...blah. The D2s on the smaller ride toms really impress me, and I can get some great rock tom sounds out of them.

| D2's and D4's are much more diverse/usable with many different sounding drum kits than the 421's...IMO. The 421 is a great mic, but it can be a bit fussy with certain drum tones. B |

| Are the clip good? They don't seem to have a suspension on them and I wonder if it changes the sound compared to a normal stand. I'm used to MD421, would I be better with the D4 or the D2? |

| I've been using my D4 for live (stage) bass drum, and it sounds very good.

| I don't know if this is what you're talking about but I used to use the audix drum clips or whatever they're called instead of a stand and I quickly noticed that the drum vibrating thru the clip caused way too much audible distortion to be useful in a recording enviroment. I went back to using stands and have had no problems with distortion. |

I'm looking for a natural tone but more on the "trashy" side of things. I like the tone on weezer's blue album, 1979 from smashing pumpkins...that kind of stuff. I can always mid-scoop in the mix if I do a punk or metal project.

Trash it up? sure. The D4 is quite a lot like a 421 on the M position. The Blue album sounds like 421's on the toms to me. So I'd go for 421's or D4's.

| Nevermind I found some here: https://www.frontendaudio.com/Articles.asp?ID=174 Actually on those samples I prefer the D2 D4 combo than the MD421, it seems like it would require less eq to sound right. I've been considering the CAD M179 too for toms and general use also, anybody know how they compare to the audix? |

| Lives for gear | The BIG difference is the directional properties of the Audix mics. It is at -30dB to the rear, so you get a much tighter sound with them. I get on great with the clips, though they cannot be used on a few kits with separation rigs on the hoops.

| Don't you get distortion (resonance) from the tom shell when you use clips? |

| i am an audix dealer, i know the mics very well the off-axis rejection is superb and is what really sets audix mics apart from the rest, great for live drum micing. i personally prefer a 421 for studio use on toms, but have never actually put them next to each other for a shootout. a sales rep suggested this trick: use a d2 (high) and a d4 (low) to mic up a leslie cabinet, then play with the panning for the desired rotary effect. great results. |
