Loved the D1s. Hated the D2s on snare, passable on toms. D4 was pretty good.

Lots of mics I'd use before a D2, including 308/408/468. I think the only time I'd use a D2 now is for live if I wanted all the mics to match.

Have no idea why they stopped making the D1.
