Where's the best place to get my DA-30mkii repaired in LA?

Hey guys,

I have a monster DAT transfer project to do and my DA-30mkii is giving me the ole Error 1. It takes in the tape, chews on it for awhile and then gives the error. Something funky in the transport mechanism.

I was somewhat torn about getting it fixed since DATs aren't worth poop anymore, but the DATs are outtakes from old Peter Gabriel, Jeff Beck, Youssou N'dour, etc sessions, so its cool stuff and the guy I'm doing it for is obviously a heavy cat, so its good business.

Where should I take it? I've used Advanced Musical Electronics in the past, but wasn't super thrilled with their customer service. If they're the best place, I'll go there, but if someone has a better suggestion I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

Mike

You are in LA. We can rent anything for a good price. Renting a DAT machine for a week will be a lot cheaper than getting yours fixed.

Yeah, I thought about that, but I'm talking about a few hundred DATs, so this will be an ongoing project. I'm guessing it'll cost me anywhere from $75-$150 to get it fixed, which will be cheaper in the long run and my DAT will be functional again...not that I expect to ever use it again after I'm done with this! :-)

I wanted to gte my old Sony 2300 fixed, and went to Adam Liberman in Berkeley - he said he absolutely works on no DATS any more except Panasonic 3700 and 3800. I found a 3800 for $250 from another list and all is well now. I don't do ebay so I feel very lucky! YOu can find them on ebay though.

In LA? Why not take it right to Tascam in Motebello. That's what I would do.

Best DAT repair in LA is FET Electronics up in Burbank (on Burbank Blvd). These guys are awesome- great service and a warranty on all work that they do. I've even had them do the work while I wait.
