The only thing I know is that I saw them on TV doing a live performance, and Hope was singing into a Sennheiser MD421. Maybe or maybe not the mic used in the studio. I love Mazzy Star....great stuff!

Well...I do know that one element in that vocal chain is lots of reverrrrrrrrrbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb. It's funny, but I recently pulled out my copy of their second record and was thinking to myself how one has to have some balls to pile the reverb on to that degree. But hey...it works. I do very much dig Mazzy Star. 'She Hangs Brightly' is a timeless classic IMHO.

Also, do check out David Roback's pre-Mazzy Star band Opal, essentially the same band with Kendra Smith (prev. from the Dream Syndicate) on vocals and bass. As much as I dig Mazzy, I think Opal is even more to the moon. I think I'm going to go put on 'Happy Nightmare Baby' right now...seriously.

It can be a little difficult to track down, but Opal's "Early Recordings" singles & outtakes album is even better than HNB.. tracks like "My Only Friend" and "Harriet Brown" are amazing, the whole album sounds beautiful..
