Thanks man. We just keep it simple and use great gear. Honestly, the tone of the pres is a huge part of it and good instruments played well.

James,

This is such a cool idea. To see a project dissected and presented in in gradual progressions is such a great learning experience.

I love this thread. Thanks Bro.

I heard the Ubershall at his studio the other day, and that thing sounds bigger and wider than the Grand Canyon! I can't wait to hear it on record!

The samples sound amazing James! Keep up the good work.

I am not quite sure about the snare, yet.
The bass is nice, though.

Man, those Ubers record so well... I regret getting rid of mine, although I love the amp I got for it - a VHT Deliverance 120. Can't wait to see what you do with the guitars!

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I wasn't sold on the snare either but we did the best we could. I'm gonna have to blend samples. I think it will be fine once it's mixed.

As far as DI bass, not much. I actually didn't really like the DI coming out of the Ampeg all that much. Plus I really want to get more of an amp thing for my record. So much of what I've been hearing lately and working on in the studio is the DI with plugin simulators for tone and I'm tired of it. Not that it doesn't work fine I'm just personally getting kinda over it and looking for something more raw and organic. That's kinda why the whole snare sample thing is bumming me out a little but there's nothing I can do now. We f**ked with that snare for an hour and that was the best we could get it.

This is the reality of recording, you have to bob and weave a bit. I heard the kick mic fell out of the kick 2 songs into Frampton Comes Alive. Just gotta make it work.

Guitars on Monday, I am so excited. I played tonight in one of my cover bands so my hands are ready.

Nice job James. I'll have to stop in on a session soon. I'm cutting drums on Monday, so maybe I'll sneak in to witness 'the rock'.

I wouldn't worry so much about the 'ping' in that snare. It's easily repairable. Apart from that little anomaly I think the snare sounds quite good. It has girth!!!

Don't bum on the snare yet. I like the ring and the and the crack - it's definitely gonna cut thru a mix. I think you're gonna like it later when the gtr & vox come to join the party.

Instead of blending a snare sample from a library/CD, blend your own by running the snare thru a distortion pedal or gtr amp and sneaking that up under the original. (maybe after compressing the crap out of it, too.) Stay organic. Your vibe is too cool to go mucking it up with drum samples. Rumble On.

That ping lives around 900Hz. Notch it the f**k out then shelve it up at around 6k.

James,

The snare sounds fine. Nothing that can't be changed with some serious analoge eq and a Distressor on the close snare mic and perhaps some mangling of the room mic.

Rock on!

Greetings,
Dirk

P.S. Agreed on the sample thing, get's boring very quickly.

You call that questionable snare sound? Sounds very good to me. I hate using samples cos it takes away from what the band really sounds like. I'd rather hear the real thing, even if it doesn't sound like a $3,000 Keplinger brass snare played by Matt Cameron. Too many people are using samples like a crutch. I want real bands back.

Snare?

Not knowing what sound you're going for aside, I think the snare is fine..and ....don't be scared...I'm also a drummer, to my ears I like that "ring" for those tracks. Sounds natural!
I think you're wise to wait for the mix before you start adding in any samples.
Good luck..I like this thread.

Thanks guys. I think you guys are right about samples. I really want this to be real and raw sounding. I've been listening to Rush 'Hemispheres' all week and the sound of that record is perfect to me. I love it.

I'm a drummer. Love the PING!!

How much GR did you let the 1176's do on the bass-mics when tracking?
