Would it be better than a MD 421 or a SM 57 for Rock recordings ???

I actually like 421's for toms. They'll need some EQ. The B1's might get you a little more cymbal bleed, if you care about that. I guess everyone mutes the tom tracks these days...

I have multiple SM57's, Beta 57's and B1's. For toms I have chose the SM57's. I instead use the B1's for rooms on a kit.

Hope this helps.

If you would like to hear the results using B1's as rooms, Oktavas 012 for overhead, SM57 for snare, Beta57 for bottom of snare, Beta 52 + SM57 for kick, you can hear it here:

More of a country sound:

Hope this is of some use.

B1's also used on some of the acoustic guitar work.

I think the B1's are pretty decent tom mics. I also use 421's as well. I would say the B1 has a bigger, larger than life sound, with more of a detailed attack when used for close-miking toms. The 421's seem to accentuate more of the thud and boom. What a crappy description. Here's an MP3 (not the best sounding one unfortunately) where B1's were used on toms through a John Hardy mic preamp...it was a maple Ludwig kit with coated Ambassadors:

You can hear tom fills right at the beginning (0:02) and around 1:46-1:53.

Hope that helps,
Brad

Nice job Brad. Couple questions: What kind of snare was used, what mic did you use on snare, what compressor did you use...I liked the drums

Just a correction from Lomola's post above. Dan Richards (aka Dot) is the Listening Session's guy, whereas Dan Kennedy makes the Great River pres.

Thanks. :) The snare was a Ludwig Black Beauty with a coated Ambassador on top. I'm pretty sure that it was miked with an SM57, but it may have been a Radio Shack 33-3032 (don't laugh--yeah the ones that look like clip-on Sennheiser drum mics). I would have to double check. The compressor is called an Altec 1589B mic preamp. I neglected to use a pad, so the mic preamp got super crunchy and really clipped the snare a LOT. So I didn't have to use a compressor at all really to control the level. The Altec really adds some grit and presence to snares that I like. During mixdown, however, I started regretting my super crunchified snare sound, so I tried to restore some snap with a UAD EX-1 channel strip compressor plugin (4:1 ratio, attack=40 ms) and a transient shaper plugin called Dominion which is free at Digitalfishphones. Then there was a little EQ and that was about it. The rest of the snare sound comes from the overheads which was a Royer SF12 through an API.

To be honest I felt like I kind of botched those drums between the Altec level setting mishap and my choice of D112 for kick. I swear that's the last time I'll ever use that mic on kick again.

Yes, I did the recording. I do not play in Marisma, although they are my friends and I did contribute a couple guitar tracks and background vox on the recording. They practice in my studio.

Well I'll have to pass the compliment along to the band. I'm sure he would appreciate that. :)
