| Gear nut | Roger Hodgson's wah sound on Crime of the Century
Supposin' a feller wanted to get himself a wah pedal, and his really really specific tonal reference was stuff like Bloody Wll Right off of Supertramp's Crime of the Century masterpiece...what pedal would that feller be looking for? Boutique, Italian Jen CryBaby, WHAT? Thanks a million in advance. michael |

Not sure of the answer but this is the URL of Roger Hodgson's own website: http://www.unichord.com/ The site is undergoing maintenance right now but once it's back up you may be able to ask him directly... |

This is a wild guess too, but check out http://www.chicagoiron.com/ version of the tycobrahe parapedal. also, Wah's can also get more interesting when the input signal is too hot.....try a booster both before and after (using the after one to trim things back to normal) Andy |

Just a thought, but Ken Scott, perhaps the greatest rock engineer EVER, might have more to do with the result than the choice of pedal.

Not just a thought, but a really good thought. I share your admiration for Ken Scott, without a doubt. And a healthy respect for all the elements in the tone chain, especially Roger's hands and Ken's ears. (On a side note, that original Trident console is on its way here to Nashville, and will be living five minutes from my house.) There's just a real natural quality to the sweep and Q of the wah on that particular record that fits really well IMHO. To further complicate things, wahs seem to vary a bunch from unit to unit, almost as much as fuzz pedals to my ear. So even scoring an example of whatever Roger used wouldn't guarantee the desired sound of that link in the chain. It just seemed like Slutz was the one place I could toss out a fairly arcane subject and hope for at least a useful perspective or two. And that's exactly what I got. Thanks! BTW, I snagged a used Teese RMC3 today, which seems to be the most tunable boutique wah out there. It was either that or buy a boxfull of old ones hoping to strike gold. |
