opinions on clean guitar sound?

I'm looking for the most pristine clean guitar sound possible. It's really slow dark kinda mogwai instrumentals. We have a '69 twin and peavey classic 50 that both sound pretty good. What's your favorite mic to get a super smooth sound?

I'm using a R121 into either a chandler or vintech. It sounds pretty good, but I'm just curious if anyone else has had some good luck and found something they really like.

I have had good luck with a 72 twin reverb and a U87 on the cloth. Also try an EV635a. Its a great guitar cab mic. I think the SP B-1 about 5 feet back would work pretty good too.

Before I got the ribbon, I used a SP B3 with pretty good results. The dragonfly has gotten employed one or twice for that occasion as well. Would the the r84 sound much different than the 121 on clean guitars? Based on the frequency spectrum, it doesn't look like the r84 has the same midrange boost.

I have a '71 Twin Reverb that I record a lot. I often use an R121 into a Vintech 1272 or API for clean guitars. But I also really like the sound of 421's on clean guitars--they add a nice presence that the Royer doesn't seem to have without reaching for EQ.

I usually use a 67 or 87 on cln gtr. I figure if it worked for Ken Scott it might work for me.

Yeah, you can't get much better than the R121 IMO. What is it you feel like you are lacking? Where are you placing the mic? This can have a profound effect.
For a more pristine sound, I would first make sure you are getting the sound you want out of the amp, then I would swap the preamp for something a bit more pristine. I would suggest you try the Daking pre. Nice coloration, but much more open than the others you mention, and the eq on the Daking is unbelievable.

You might want to give the back side of the R121 a try.

Between the R121 and R84 I have never been disappointed with guitar sounds. Clean or high gain. You already have the pres, but a Pendulum might get you more of what your looking for as well.

I've also had really good results with all sorts of mic's, Senn 409's, Beyer M69's(darker but good) and 414's. Don't rule out small diaphragm condensers either.

I also through a 25w "geenback" into my Classic 30. It came alive.
