New Gear to do the drum thing: what to use on what?

Hey,

Here's a question. I've got a great drummer coming in and a selection of pre's and mic's and was wondering what some people would rather use for what. I just wanted to know if other people had a different perspective. This is all going ITB. The music is beatles, crowded house, elvis costello clean but retro-ish.

The mic's:

Overheads: 2x Rode NT2's <<<OR>>>> 2x AKG C1000

Snare top SM57, Shell AKG 414B-ULS

Kick Beta 52

Tom's SM57's

Room Mic: Peluso P12

Preamps:

Aphex 1100 Tube 2 channel
1970's Sound Workshop 1280b (neve pre and API e.q. comparisons)
LA-610

compressor:

HHB Radius 3 Fat Man

First I was gonna play around with the patterns, position and compression of the peluso before I brought up the other mics, running it through the LA-610. I thought maybe I would use the Aphex 1100 with the NT2's through the fat man to do some light compression there as well.... , and use the Sound Workshop for the remaining mic's and use a bit of it's eq to dial out a bit of the 300 area and do a little fundamental boosting on the shells.

I guess the question comes down to what mic's on the kit benifit most from the tube preamps, and I know the LDC vs. SDC on overheads is mostly taste, but wanted some opinions on that as well. The Fat Man is also questionable, but would it still be better than ITB compression? I don't do any outboard stuff in the mix, so I really want to get the drum picture just right before the converters.

Also, my room is small but fairly neutral (not totally dead), would you scrap the peluso and use the LA-610 on the kick? I borrow that pre from a friend and haven't read the manual on it's attack time... "my gut tells me" it's too slow to do a good job on kick/snare.

I haven't recieved the Sound Workshop yet, so if you have some experience with them feel free to let me know what I'm gettin' in to!

Cheers,
The Bunny
