Nuendo and external effects

I know this is basic and user error on my part but after doing research and troubleshooting, I'm still not resolving the issue that I have. I'm using Nuendo and I have no trouble using external effects when I used a powered unit like an Eventide.
However, when I use a guitar stomp box fx pedal (BOSS or MXR) as the external fx, I get a weak and terrible sounding signal. I've used a preamp to boost the signal of the BOSS/MXR pedal but the signal is still a bit low and slightly distorted.

Here is the chain that works for external effects:

Nuendo out - Motu in - Motu out - into patchbay - patchbay falls into powered fx (Eventide)

Then I do the reverse to get back into Nuendo

Now when I do the same thing with the BOSS pedals, it obviously doesnt work becauase there is nothing to power it out of the patchbay. So I've tried all sorts of routing, preamps and patching. I've even bypassed the patchbay, used different cables etc and the problem is constant. Any BOSS or MXR pedal sounds awful when being used as an external fx.

Thanks for you help, I know there has got to have a simple solution and I'll take any deserved abuse for overlooking it....

Nuendo out (motu) into a 'reamp' box (radial, little labs, etc.) then into the stomp box, then into a DI, back into Nuendo.

ReAmp Boxes. Why are they necessary?
