What's the cost?

i have some used gear to sell, ans while trying to calculate the asking prices, I began to wonder, "what does this stuff really cost?"

I remember MANY years ago reading an article that determined that the cost of parts in a Mac Plus (circa 1988 or so) was like $ 75 bucks or something. I've heard that a Domino's Pizza (love them or not) has about a quarter's worth of ingredients.

Disregarding R&D which is obviously valuable, and manufacturing, etc... what do you suppose the components of a 002R or an Accel card cost?

I guess this depends on what you are counting as "cost". Is cost just physcial materials being assembled? Or is cost research, design, tooling, manufacturing, marketing, wages and benefits to those who do all the above tasks, quality control, warranty repair, tech support, rent and facilities expenses to perform all the above and oh yeah, a profit to make it worth while so as to be a business not an expensive hobby.

I probably missed a bunch of things but I think you get the idea. A donato's pizza costs more than 25cents to make even if it only has 25 cents of ingredients in the pie!

A Mac Plus was arount 3200 in 1986 - 1 MB of RAM cost $1000.00.
Ram and other components where very expensive back then.
My First Apple a 512K "Fat Mac" was $2000.00 used!
I doubt the cost to Apple was $75.00

Even if you leave out labor altogether, if you ask what is the cost of something in these terms you need to specify the level at which you are splitting up the parts. even parts have parts.

for example in the case of the 002 - are you going to count the cost of the chips as what digi paid for them as working chips or do you count them as melted down silicon, aluminum, and copper?
