| audio technica 4060- i need to hear it Im considering buying this mic and l it looks quite a bargain at the price its at, looking at the reviews. The problem with the reviews is just that, they are just reviews. I need to hear the mic in action. Ill mostly be tracking hip-hop through it seeing as its quite popular for this genre. Can anyone please point me in the direction of any recordings done with this mic (myspace page etc). Or if you could find it in youre heart to post sum vocals recorded with this mic i would be most gratefull. Im looking to cop it monday or tuesday. help a brother please thanks and blessings Bendecido |

| thanks alot bruther. hmm seems like the mic has a bit of a smiley face frequency curve. im not sure that will be suited too hip-hop- probably need sumin less smooth and more punchy with more mids. u87 comes to mind. blessings |

| Lives for gear | I'd listen to it and really think not overall if it will work for hip-hop (it will) but rather think about which artists voices it will fit and how. Not everyone in hip-hop has the same voice. I've got a AT4060 and used to have a U87. This sounds nothing at all like the U87, and I like it far more in general for most voices, but for some the U87 is the trick. I like it much better on acoustic guitar and for a room mic on drums than I do the U87 too.

| The first track on my audio page (New Orleans) is the 4060 (ME1-NV preamp) http://www.logcabinmusic.com/id3.html It's a GREAT mic... especially for the price these days.

| niceone guys- really appreciate it. but i think ill go with the u87 it still seems a bit of a smiley curve freq to me perfect for singers. but im not sure itll have that mid range "cut through the track" sound that rappers need and is synonamous with the u87. U87 is the best bet i think, its a famous sound and most of the classic hip hop albms were recorded with them. I was under the impression that the at4060 might be similar but i was mistaken. thanks alot for youre help guys peace be with you |

| The acoustic was km184s in ORTF. Can't really go wrong with the U87... Get Jim Williams to mod it for you and you'll really have a KILLER mic.

| As far as I know it is the least expensive mod out there. A few things are swapped out and the 'veil' is lifted so to speak. You should call him and get specifics. http://www.audioupgrades.com

| I will speak to him thanks. But in all honesty i love the u87ai sound. my bruther i find the "veil" you speak of to lend itself quite favourably to hip-hop where alot of old sounding 70s samples are used and the mic needs to match that character and ambience. I dont know why so many people hate on it. I think it is the last great mic that neumann produces. No other mic produces the same mid rich full sound and im quite biased to that sound. It rules for hip-hop. In fact id say its one of the greatest mics of all time at least models that are new or have been keptin good condition-ive used ones that were somewhat delapidated from too many sessions and didnt sound the same. But in its prime state it is amazing. I mean all the classic hip hop albums i love were recorded with the u87. 2pac-all eyez on me -Makaveli, Nas- illmatic, Wu Tang- Enter the 36, BIG- ready to die, Jay-z - Reasonable doubt And of course its the best looking mic their is in my humble opinion (that purple badge and the body and head is pure class), not that that is too important but it doesnt hurt. i dont know why i asked this at4060 question in retrospect, i ges i was trying to save pennies. The u87 is the one for me blessings and peace be unto all |

| If you love the 87ai--get one. I can't say I like the 4060 as well, BUT...it's ANYTHING but smiley faced. It's VERY mid foward, IMO. Lacking onthe lows and extreme highs... |

| I didnt want somin with a smiley face curve i dont find thos kind of mics (ala 251) have enough punch for hip-hop. Rap vocals need sumin to cut through the mix that why im so favourable to the u87. |

However, if budget is no object--get the 87AI. You're comfortable with the sound. | |

I love the character the u87ai imparts to vocals going through it. And im a firm believer in the philosophy if it aint broke dont fix it. <br> But as you say if it still sounds like a u87 and it enhances the mics qualities it seems worth a shot. Quote:
