Tried some "tube" vocal microphones at NAMM

Here are the ones I sang through;

1) Telefunken USA 251
2) Telefunken USA U47
3) Telefunken USA C12
4) Marshall V69
5) Studio Projects T3
6) Studio Projects TB1
7) Manley Reference Gold

The three favorites on my voice (lyric baritone-YMMV),
were the '251, Manley, and the T3. U47 repro was 4th.

I was a little surprised/disapointed the C12 reproduction didn't do more for my voice. Still sounded WAY excellent though.
Was pleasantly surprised how well the $500 or so T3 did among stiff competition.

It would take one of the strong pro AE's here to judge between the top three on me IMHO.

Different pre's.

Not sure what the Tele's were going through (bet great!),
or the Marshall.
The Manley was through a Langevin.
The SP's were through a Grace IIRC.

Enough to give me a rough idea in any event.

The bigger priority than "which pre" for me now is getting the home studio under better acoustic control first for using condensers. And to keep improving performance skills.
