What effect does he use here ?

hei all , second post in a day ...

on the live show " Pulse " , David gilmor on one of his songs there ( i dont remmber the name ) he uses some kind of small & long mic that goes inside his mouth, when he opens and closes the mouth it create effect , somting like flanger.

my buddy here realy liked it, what the hell is it ? is it a regular mic ona separate channel with effect ? it looks like this thing could be connected to his guitar, could it be some kind of the moog theramin devicees ?

anyone remembers ?

thx in advance .

You sure it's a mic and not a tube?

Yeah, my thought is he's using the same thing that Peter Frampton uses, it's a Talk Box. Currently it's being made by Dunlop Manufacturering.

It's a Talk Box...

It takes the sound from any amplified instument (uses the speaker out of the amplifier), and sends it to a small speaker inside a small sealed box and the sound has but one place to escape... a hollow tube.

This tube is held in the players mouth, the sound enters the players mouth and is 'manipulated' by changing the shape of the mouth. Just like talking. However we don't actually hear the player's voice, we hear the shape version of the instrument being played.

The sound then reflects out of the players mouth into a mic - which is then sent to the PA so it can be heard.

Of course if the player closes his mouth completly, there is no more reflected sound to go into the mic, so it sound as though someone has shut the thing down, also a neat effect... but makes saying things with 'm' a struggle to master... playing a talk box effectively is a real tallent!

Here is Stevie using one...

A similar device is a vocoder, which uses the players voice from a mic (rather than reflected sound) to shape instrument sounds.
