Guitar Compression....Am I hearing more than I realize on commercial records?

I have been listening to a lot of different styles of music and referencing my mixes to them. It seems like every track I listen to, the guitars are always so even and smooth. I don't really compress my guitars. Are you guys compressing guitars a lot? Is it something you can get away with more since distorted guitars don't have the type of peaks and valley's that drums and vocals do?

The use of compression depends on so many factors. Like, what stlye of music, how well it was tracked, equipment used, etc. There is no right way to do. Just make it sound good.

That may be due to Ted Jensen style peak limiting in mastering.
