Recording "live scratch tracks"?..

So i've been asked to do a 5 track EP with a band,.. but they want to record all of their 14 songs first - then decide which will work, and which to commit to tape.

What's the easiest way to do this?

L and R out of a mixing desk into Protools, or just put some room mics up and record that...?

Thanks.

Why not just mic everything up like you will be for recording and have them run through them? Then you can just move on to doing the real recording after without having to set everything up.

So,..How do you suggest i do this then?

I'm going to be recording in a shared facility, so will only have maximum 5 hours at a time to record these 14 "live" tracks. The problem with this facility is it has a tiny live space, so i can't really put all 5 members in there at once to record these 14 tracks.

I was going to either do some in the studio,.. and some in their practice space: by putting everything into two channels and recording them that way.
Or are you guys suggesting something else?

what type of setup are you using? why do you strictly want to use just two channels?

ProTools HD system @ Uni,.. No idea of the i/o - but i can presume 16+

At home i've got Protools LE w/ Digi 002R & Motu 8 Pre.

I'm not really comitted to using just two channels - but i figured since it's a rough track,.. you wouldn't want to track it as a "demo" version?

Opinions are all welcome however, i've by no means decided - and i'd really like inputs on this.

If you are going to mic it up anyway, just hit record and do everything to a seperate track. Once complete go back and choose the best five to work on. You will already have the layout ready to go, and you never know when you get that miracle take when everyone is relaxed. They also might have trouble choosing the best five and end up wanting to do the whole album, which would be plus busniess for you.

My 2 cents....
