When did Noise Gates become used in Studios

I'd guess in the seventies but I have no idea.

Anybody?

The first ones that I was aware of were the Allison Research Kepexs probably late sixties/early seventies. I also remember the Roger Mayer gates of the same time period of which I still have 4 in my back room.

Cool, thanks Rick.

They're mostly used in mixing right?

Gates are pretty obsolete (in DAWs) now that we have the delete key. Unless of course you want that mangled sound or are lazy.

Correct. Sometimes I'll use an expander, carefully, during recording, but a true noise gate is a dangerous animal to use when you don't get second chances.

Huh?
yeah, a lot of "gating" is now done as automation draws in a DAW but there are still times that a good gate can be a life saver. An Aphex 612 came in real handy on a rock mix yesterday.

I still have 4 kepex's from the place I used to work. I use them a bit for gating room mikes and triggering them to open from the source dynamics. A bit like the Bowie Heroes thing. I love watching the lights go up and down on them. Gates are to me a bit like consoles - yeah you could do it in the track with the cut and delete but why when you can just patch a gate in and away you go. So much quicker to get the same result, and easier to shape the tails. Maybe I'm just gettin old.
