| When did Noise Gates become used in Studios I'd guess in the seventies but I have no idea. Anybody? |

| The first ones that I was aware of were the Allison Research Kepexs probably late sixties/early seventies. I also remember the Roger Mayer gates of the same time period of which I still have 4 in my back room. |

| Cool, thanks Rick. They're mostly used in mixing right? |

| Gates are pretty obsolete (in DAWs) now that we have the delete key. Unless of course you want that mangled sound or are lazy. |

| Correct. Sometimes I'll use an expander, carefully, during recording, but a true noise gate is a dangerous animal to use when you don't get second chances. |

yeah, a lot of "gating" is now done as automation draws in a DAW but there are still times that a good gate can be a life saver. An Aphex 612 came in real handy on a rock mix yesterday. | |

| I still have 4 kepex's from the place I used to work. I use them a bit for gating room mikes and triggering them to open from the source dynamics. A bit like the Bowie Heroes thing. I love watching the lights go up and down on them. Gates are to me a bit like consoles - yeah you could do it in the track with the cut and delete but why when you can just patch a gate in and away you go. So much quicker to get the same result, and easier to shape the tails. Maybe I'm just gettin old.
