VINTECH (Neve clones). Good or Bad?

I'm interested in purchasing one of the Neve replicas for a strong yet smooth R&B tenor. I need some suggestions and comments concerning these units. Should I buy one or should I look at something else. The mic that I'm using now is an AKG 414 U BLS. If there are suggestions on another mic/mic pre combo, I'm all ears. My budget is around $2500. If necessary, I could probably spend up to $3000, though I prefer to continue to use the 414. Help please.

I just took the plunge and purchased the Vintech 609ca stereo comp.........I was very hesatate because of all the Vintech bashing that goes on here...I also previously own a Vintech 1272 preamp and was very dissapointed and sold it soon after.........I went over to my friends recording facility last week and spent a few hours with the Vintech 609ca putting it through the test...........It sounded beautiful and it was exactually what I been looking for for the mix and drum buss duties.......sent a check out the very next day for one should get the unit in the next couple of days will report back on the unit..........but from what I and two other studio engineer heard we all thought it sounded fantasic.........believe your ears not your eyes!

Are you trying to start a fight here or something

Nothing wrong with Vintech gear. It sounds great and they are built like a tank. You can certainly find them for well under $2000 and you may even be able to get a pair in the budget range you are mentioning!!

Others to consider;

Chandler LTD-1

and I hear the Brent Averill stuff is pretty damn close as well

They make a 1073 and a 1084 both for $2500

Good luck in your search

I've also heard very good things about the Great River 2NV. In fact, I don't think I've heard anything really bad about it.

If you got 2500 to spend id go with the brent averill 1073 clone. ive heard they are exactly like the originals not one difference. I have only had experience with ams neve dpd that is exactly the same as the original made to the same specs as well and u cud probbly cop one for 2500. Plus its 2 chanel no eq tho. I really liked it even tho im not the biggest fan of the neve sound (unlike alot of people on here). but that just my opinion

How about the "473" ?

They seem to be priced pretty damn good for 4 channels.
And you get some EQ as well, well they call it "essential EQ" or something.

I was considering 2 of them as a possible 2nd setup for mixing tape as they can do Mic or Line level if I read correctly.

Whats the deal on these?

We have a pair of x73is. Love them for some things (bass, some vocals, keys), less so for others... They are not the same as Neve 1073s, but they are in the same sort of ballpark Good product for the $$.

I used to have a Dual 72, which I thought was great for what it was. It found it's way onto several releases.

I eventually sold it because we have so many different flavors of "Neve", including Neve 1272s, that it was a bit excessive.

I would get another in a heartbeat. If, in fact, I needed it.

I used to have a Dual72 as well which I really enjoyed. Then I picked up a Great River and felt like the GR could do everything the Dual72 could and a lot more. So I sold the Dual72. But it's a good buy for the money, especially on the used market. I always had good luck with it on guitars and vocals.

I had a 473.not a bad pre..but I still sold it..
Ultimately when i put it up agianst original 1073s..it sounded smaller /thinner by comparison..and the eq is nothing close to a real 80 series
Based on my experience,i'd do the Daking/Wunder/API 4 channel route over the Vintech.

+1 on the dakings. The mic pre IV is an outstanding deal right now. I haven't put anything through them yet that I didn't like.

The CL1MK2 comp is excellent.

My friend bought one a while back. I was originally gonna buy it, but got a Manley
SLAM instead. Will buy a CL1MK2 during feb hopefully.
