oops there is more!

Vocals: Mostly a Rode NT1-A, but sometimes a Studio Projects B3 in either omini or fig-8 mode (depth)

Bass: Direct through a PreSonus Tube pre with a ratio of 1:4 (tube drive: Gain) OR 1" offset MXL 2001, 2" from cab at med SPL

I LOVE CRITICISM, BUT I LOVE LOVE EVEN MORE

I'd take the snare from the top too - but if it works for you - go ahead

I just have no mandolin players handy. I'd like to try recording it someday. I just posted my setup to spark controversy. Its fun seeing the positive and sometimes needlessly negative posts that result.
As u can see I have a very limited budget... BTW once I get more inputs to the recorder I will be double miking the snare for sure

Why don't you put your snare mic from the top from the beginning? I can hardly use a bottom snare mic. If I need during the mix I' make a reamp with the ratteling snare on speaker trick, which works better for me than a recorded bottom mic (but that's just me )

snare

I always use a ribbon mic pointed at the drummers ass 10 degrees off axis for a fat neve tubey warm farty snare sound. 10 degrees off axis to save the ribbon from plosives.

I will delete this. really.

how's the weather in tumpe this time of year?

KILL the newbie!!!!

I will provide samples soon. You may be pleasantly suprised. The bottom snare works for my drummer really well because his hat is loud as death and we love that paper-ish sound coming off the bottom. Not to mention I only have 8 inputs at any one time. In most situations this would not be my first approach. I like that Idea about miking from the top and re-amping the bottom... It wil be tried once I get the necessary means. Im just laughing at some of you attitudes I must say.

Tempe, are you a CRAS kid?

Are you over dubbing drums, or recording your band as a whole?

Put a 57 on top of the snare, move your two over heads to the out side of the kick, maybe 3ft off the ground, and put that NT1 in front of the kick, maybe 6ft away. D112 in the kick. Compress the NT1, and sub-mix it in. Let the two knee highs get all of your kit energy, treat the snare and kick as you wish.

Just an alternate idea for your set-up... I'd shoot myself if I had to record everything the exact same way everyday. Mic your drums for the song you're recording... it's pretty unusual to mic the kit the same way for the whole record.

my 2 cents

Yeah Im a CRAS kid. That sounds like a cool setup. Im going to have a chance to mess around with it all much more once i move into a house that permits recording. These days I have to drive across town to our rehearsal space to do anything. Half the time, I get the mics and everything setup, and then a band starts jamming out next door. Late-nite sessions are usually the quietest but ruin my sleep schedule.. AWWW SHUCKS! sorry for bitching...

sample

I know i will be slayed for this...maybe. I made an MP3 of some stuff i recorded (11/03) with the setup that started both this thread and my forum membership. However, on this particular recording I only used overheads, a Floor Tom Mic and a bass drum mic. The whole band was tracked live in one room and the vocalist used a Shure PG-57, with single SM57 on Guitar amp. I am rather pleased considering the circumstances. BTW: Thats a Wave Arts Track Plug on a few tracks, Lexicon Pantheon Reverb.

Wow, that wasn't so bad. I wasn't expecting much for some reason? I guess you came off as kinda "reckless"...no, that's not the right word.... never mind.

Anyway, how was the bass guitar recorded?

What kind of room was this recorded in? A practice space? For monitoring vocals, did you have a PA setup in there or were they using headphones?

What machine did you record this to?

Ok... so the drums sound pretty good, goodonya.

But someone needs to find that guitar player a ****ing metronome.

Bad time is the single most offensive element to non-pro recordings.

Bass was recorded w/ an MXL 2001 about 5" off the cone (4*10 cab). The room is basically a medium-sized practice room. The vocals were coming out of a PA so the band could hear, and I used an Aux send to get him to the recorder. This track was just a random improvisation at band practice. The machine was a Fostex VF-160 digital multitrack. Mixed it on Sonar 3.

Interesting. I've had the VF-16 for about 4 years now. I am absolutely in love with it.
