mixers

Well, looks like a good list of the usual names so far, but I would have to add Steve MacMillan and Jack Joseph Puig. If only because these 2 have mixed at least 3 or 4 of my favorite sounding albums in the past 20 years. Still, some of the very best stuff I've ever heard is unreleased and mixed by unknowns. Plus, I don't exactly suck. I just ain't got no hits. But then again, I don't get out much.

Andy Wallace... yeah. That's about it. I absolutely LOVED his A Perfect Circle mixes.

Geoff Emerick :

I listened to the Zombies 'Odeseey and Oracle' yesterday and there it was on the first track: The exact same sound that Paul got on 'Sgt. Pepper'! ('Oddesey' was done right after Sgt. Pepper and mostly at Abbey Road') 'it's the player' 'It's the song', etc.....all true but in the end it only works if somebody is able to translate and glorify it.

Geoff Emerick = Innovation and craft in splendid synergy.

Bruce Swedien:

A while ago, I listened to Herbie Hancock's excellent 'Gershwin's Word' record and thought to myself 'My god, this is a great sounding mix'. Checked the credits then.....

Glyn Johns / Andy Johns / Eddie Kramer / Ken Scott:

That amazing rock and roll attitude. Stones/Zep/Who/Traffic/Hendrix/Mahavishnu/Supertramp!

- Andy Wallace:

If 'Grace' was the only record he ever did it would be enough for a spot on the Mix Olymp! I wish he would produce more but then again, where do you go after Jeff Buckley?

- Chuck Ainley:

Everything I ever heard that he mixed was sounding great.

.....and so many others........

Can't say that I have a "favourite" per se, but nearly everytime I've been listening to a record and found myself thinking "Damn, this sounds really good!" invariably the engineer was Ron St. Germain.

NEW TWIST

How about including your favorite example (record) of their work with your favorite mixers?

[Yes, you're just helping me build my reference mix library :]

Bob Clearmountain - Jonatha Brooke '10 Cent Wings'

Andy Wallace - Nirvana 'Nevermind'
Chevelle's 'This Type of Thinking'

Brendan O'Brian - Soundgarden 'Superunknown'

Mark 'Spike' Stent - Massive Attack 'Mezzanine',
(the latest Goldfrapp is killer for synthy stuff)

Andy Johns - Ray LaMontagne 'Until the sun'

...

More please!

I'm in the bad habit of buying CDs just for the mixers these days...

Glad to see Ethan Johns get a mention. I love the production on Ryan Adam's "Heartbreaker".

Terry Date -I like the sound of the albums he did, loud but nice and rich

Brendan O'Brien - he mixed Soundgarden Superunknown and some other great sounding records
what this guy said

A guy I have not really seen his name on this board that did some albums in the late 90's, early 2000 that I really dug was Malcolm Springer. He rawks.

Aw dammit.

When I originally cast my vote it was with regard to "Your Favorite Mixing Engineer"-singular.

That required a bit more deliberation to arrive at 'one mixer'.

I agree, Ben Folds is one of my all time favorites, his "Rockin' the Suburbs" is great, mixed by Ben Grosse, but definetly "Songs for silverman" and the "Over the hedge" album has the MB style printed.

Obviously I'm a big time fan of TLA, AW, CLA, BC, MG, JJP, Mike Shipley and "Spike" Stent.. and Geoff Emerick.

Best regards.

Armando Avila

P.S. I also love the mixes by Mr. John Paterno on "Soraya" album.
