Pete Yorn vocal chain

ANyone have any idea? BTW, as I have been posting looking for acoustic guitar mics, his acoustic guitar sound to me is perfect. Shit like "Life on a Chain" and "Sense". How amazing is music for the morning after? The songwriting is so great at some parts..."Black" is a perfect pop song to me..the chorus layering with those appregiating guitars...So perfect...

I don't know what chain was used but loved "Life On A Chain". Badda boom! sorry!

Looking at the thumbnails here it could be a 251 he's using.

Bought the album musicforthemorningafter and couldn't get enough. I have to find the CD but I believe there might be some pictures of him in the studio. I think he is a very good writer and really appreciate his arranging of instruments as well as vocals on this album. I was also impressed to read he played most of the instruments on that album. It appeared Sony was very much behind him as an artist.
Saw him on TV later that year and was less impressed with him as a performer. Just came off a little dull or light weight. His subsequent releases have failed to spark the same interest with me. I agree "Black" is very well crafted song but these days I seem to prefer a little more edge with songs in this vein i.e. "Country Girl" by Primal Scream.

Hey could they be brothers?

Ha, Primal Scream has been doing that for ages..."Give out but don't give up" is just a blatant stones ripoff...I don't know, but when I listen to primal scream I want to listen to Vanishing Point and Xterminator...I think they are a better with electronics....

primal scream is definitely light years better with electronics than as a boring stones cover band. but sometimes they want more money i guess

cheers

I recognize the Stones rip but I never get tired of that ragged kind of energy so long as it's done well. BTW I don't know how many CDs Primal Scream has released but their lastest is the first I purchased.
Pete Yorn is a very talented song craftsman. Just would prefer a little more edge than merely appearing unshaven.

Ha, great post...We must remember Bobby Gillispie (lead vox of primal scream) did A LOT of drugs to get his edge...Probably more so in Jesus and Marychain...I don't see Pete Yorn as a big drug taker....Yes, I am inferring for someone to have edge they need to do drugs...
BTW, if you want to check out a super pop dance/rock album with massive edge check out The Happy Mondays "Pills Thrills and bellyaches"....Shaun Ryder has more edge then....(can't think of analogy now)

FWIW I think you're probably correct about Pete Yorn.
On my way to check out The Happy Mondays I got sidetracked into the Second Coming by Stone Roses.

I've been digging on Nightcrawler, the more recent album, as well. It's different than Music For the... but I think the songs are pretty catchy and flow around in an interesting way. Sounds good to me.

Yeah, Underrated album...Not as good as the first which is sort of perfect but still strong, even if it's mostly a squire wank session..STill really good songs...10 story, begging you...good stuff...Try to check out some of Squires solo stuff...His voice is funny...

I agree about the show being a little dull. I played a few shows with him out in Cali. He was super cool and his band was cool too, but he is not really good at engaging an audience. I still really like his music though, and the production is great.

The bulk of Pete's vocals on MFTMA were tracked with a Manley fixed cardioid reference mic, but I can't for the life of me remember the preamp or compressor. I'll email Walt Vincent & PY to get the info. The acoustic guitars were almost always tracked w/the same mic/preamp chain. Sorry for the incomplete post. More to come...

The straight poop, as it were.

OK- PY & Walter confirm that, for the most part, vocals were tracked with the Manley through my 9098 pre/eq and Distressor. Walt also rocked the Ampex 4-channel preamp on occasion, for extra mushy tone.

Cool, out of curiosity, what did they do for acoustic guitar mics/pre?

Same as vocal chain: Manley mic, 9098 pre, Distressor. Some songs were tracked differently (w/other engineers), but the bulk was with this setup. All done in Walt's wee studio, Mesmer Ranch. Converted garage, no control room, everyone had to wear phones & be very quiet whilst tracking the quiet bits. Difficult to do, if you've just a had a burrito-wet-with-cheese & PY's just popped a few Miller Lites. Good, fragrant times.

After the distressor, what did the signal go into? A board, Protools?

Straight into the Apogee AD8000, running Digital Performer. Transferred to 2" for mixdown.

Lol! Nice image. A pleasure to have you here Brad.
Slightly OT...Pete Yorn strikes me as a pretty well thought out song writer and instrumentalist with more than comfortable knowledge of recording techniques and equipment. In contrast how much of the songwriting was done before/during the typical Liz Phair session and did she have a favorite mic or was it pretty much your call?

Liz would typically have all the words & vocal melodies & all of her guitar chords finished before entering the studio. Arrangements drums, bass, percussion, etc...) would happen in the studio. As to favorite mic, it would be the mic that worked best @ the time for her voice- either a Sony C37P (non-tube), Neumann 367 or SM58. We usually used the studio's Tascam M520 console preamps & eq to a Dynamite 3 compressor, to tape (usually a Tascam MS16 1" w/DBX engaged).

Thanks for responding.
Aah! The MS16 was my first "real" multitrack along with a Trident series 24 console. Rockin little set up and a good sounding 1". Used to bounce mixes to 1/4". I don't believe I've seen a Telefunken 367??
Hopefully, the quarters weren't as tight when recording Ms. Phair. It might have been hard to concentrate

Did you record the drums for Pete Yorn at Mesmer Ranch or did you go to a larger space for that part of the tracking?

Perhaps we should start a Brad Wood Thread!?

These posts were awesome to read! MFTMA is one of those records that every time I listen to it, I hear something new, or get a different perspective - not to mention Pete's such an awesome songwriter.

Thanks for posting, Brad!
