which recording equipment to buy

I have a mac G5 and want to start recording guitar and vocals using a midi keyboard and an interface, and then mix in some sample sounds from logic pro. I have an m-audio Ozonic which has a midi keyboard and interface combined but not having any success getting started - software issues. If that fails what other options are there for both scenarios and about $500 price range.

a gazillion.
seriously, keep your money in your pocket, and when you've doubled or tripled it, buy something.
this is not meant as degrading or anything, just that there are "invisible" lines in budget where everything suddenly just gets better.

and read all the posts on this forum
there's a ton of info, and your question (at least to me) seems too general.
but maybe someone else has something..
good luck with the drivers.

for recording you could try the apogee mini me, or ADI 2.

You are going to use the keyboard to play vocals and guitar? Damn keyboard players think they can play the whole song now......

I would maybe try this in the music and computers forum also, rarely do people geek out on software etc in this area.

guys, the Ozonic has also 4 AD/DA and mic-line preamps
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Ozonic-main.html

the preamp-converters I suggested can connect through the Toslink straight to your G5.
you can keep the keyboard of course for controller and notes..

generally I try to stay away from "do everything" machines.
and get stuff that can do one thing very good. a stable of one trick ponies.

muhhuuuuhuuuhhuu!
