| Question about two dynamic mics Hello, all When purchasing an SM-7, is it worth looking around for an "older" one (and, if so, of what "era"), or are the current ones just as good? Andsame question on MD421. Thanks... |

| New SM7B sounds the same as the old SM7 or SM7A. I think all they've changed over the years is the yoke-mount and/or the wind-screen. I've never known anyone to differentiate between new and old 421s. Old ones have usually been pretty hammered and have drum-stick dents, etc. Unless they're the really old "white" ones from the '60s/early '70s -- they're actually a light gray color--but they're only better cause they look cool and are rare and "vintage".

| I have a couple of old gray ones that I like. I think that they sound a little smoother than the new ones. However, it probably just means that I like how they've gotten f***'d up by 30 years of drummers, pot smoke and nicotine. |

| Gear maniac | i only own 2 of the old gray 421īs. And i love them!!!! a friend of mine said the newer black ones do not sound as good as the old ones... but i canīt comment on that. iīd say go for the old ones and be happy!! i also got an old SM7 and itīs a greeaaat mic, too!! both mics arenīt really fragile, so if they look good, they should work fine and serve you well the years to come

| Just buy whichever you come in contact with. Plug them in and make great music. That's what's most important!

It's not like anyone ever said the new 421's sound BAD. They don't . They sound great. There are some people who have a ~5% preference for the way the old ones sound, but you're not going to see any "Why do the new 421's Suck A**?" threads around here because these mics are still classics, the new ones included. | |
