Digi 002 rack 5-8 inputs

Hey!
Can i plug the mic output from a preamp into the line input into a digi 002 with a canon/jack cable? Do i have to put the line input then to +4dBu?

Will the result be the same as pluging it into the mic input?

Thanx guys!

Yes and Yes and no.

The result will be better than using channels 1-4 as you are not hitting the extra gain stage in the 002r pre amps. Use your outboard pres with lines 5-8 on +4dbu. I would love to find a way to completely inactivate the pres on channels 1-4 and use them as line ins only like channels 5-8. I have a lot of outboard pres and never use the ones in the 002.

I wish there was a totally separate line input on 1-4 that's exactly the same as the quality of 5-8 too.

You can set 1-4 to line/di and run your external mic preamp's line output at line level to 1-4 but it's a better signal quality on 5-8.

Doesn't the Black Lion mod do something like this? If not, I'm sure they could if you asked them!

I did ask them and I think they thought I was nuts. You would figure it would be a simple operation no? I don't think you could pay me to use the pres on the 002r. I usually rent an Apogee Rosetta 800 when tracking but having 4 extra inputs without that extra gain stage would be great.

It varies, from Chandler, UA, Shadow Hills, Mercury ect. The pres on channels 1-4 usually get utility duty like a hihat mic, under snare mic or scratch tracks that will end up being redone. I just don't want to sell my Kidneys to buy a used HD system right now so I use the 002r with an external converter/clock. I will be buying a 16 channel A/D converter soon so the inputs on the 002r won't even be used after that. I guess I have to rob a 7-11 soon.

You can use the lightpipe/adat connections with any converter, up to 8 channels in/out. I used an Apogee ad8000se for a long time. I'm borrowing a Lynx Aurora 8 right now and I'm really impressed with it. If I buy the Aurora I'd want the 16 channel version. You can use a 16 channel becuase there is a lightpipe connection on the Aurora's optional adat card for inputs 1-8 / inputs 9-16 - outputs 1-8 / outputs 9-16. For the 002 you just connect the ins/outs 1-8 (optical in/out).

What danasti said. I personally use a UA 2192 as the master clock source, connected via SPDIF.

Matt at BLA did the complete analog/converter/clock mod on my 002 back in June of 06. He even replaced the volume pots as well. I understand BLA no longer offers the converter upgrade.

My 002 is used primarily for remote work. Along with the BLA mod I 'll bring a Crane Song Flamingo and an AEA TRP (for the R88) for line inputs 5-8. Transformer/adapters are used for these inputs. If needed I use an ADAT Bridge for additional channels via lightpipe.
Here is the link of March 2006 that brought my attention to the BLA mod.

A little aside from the topic. Don't get it twisted, with a little bit of technique you can get great sounds out of the 002. Obviously it would be easier to use a Pacifica, but with some talent you can mold the 002 pres into sounding great. Problem is, it's just a bitch to learn .

If you don't want to use the extra gain stage, just use 5-8 like everyone is telling you. If you're using a particular mic that needs a lot of gain, an extra gain stage will not make your recording sound like crap. In fact, the right amount of balance can add some good character to your sound.
