So let's say I've got no cash for seperate EQ's for tracking

First off; I've got 2 Chameleon Labs 7602's and like the eq section just fine.

I'm thinking of putting together a rack of Seventh Circle Audio stuff for tracking drums. They do not have an eq section.

If I do that; and want to eq later; am I going to lose a lot of quality going out of my DAW through the MOTU 24 I/O through my CL 7602's and back into the DAW to add the nice EQ it offers?

Would the D/A conversion loss be enough to not use the eq on the 7602 and just use a plug eq?

Thanks-
Rich

Copy a track and try both. Then A/B the 2 tracks. If you've got a good mic selection, do your eq by mic choice and placement, so that when you get into your DAW, your eq adjustments will be so minor, the quality of the plug you're using won't matter.

my experience is that i always prefer the added love of good hardware over the ostensible degradation of the extra conversions.

the advice to do both and see for yourself is ultimately the only advice worth listening to.

Why not go with an ever popular API 500 series rack instead? You could get a 10 or 11 space 500 series rack and add pre's and EQ's as your budget allows... You would have access to great EQ's like the Avedis E27, API 550's & 560's, and the Avedis E27.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

i dont know if this will make you happy...but at least check it out.
within reaper (cockos.com).......is an fir eq/comp etc.
you can literally set your eq points anywhere.
no more worries about only haveing x number of bands to play with.
its pc only ...(mac port being worked on...) and also comes with some interesting emulations like 1073 within a suite of plugins called the stillwell plugins.
yeh i KNOW...its itb....but it might just float your boat....you never know.
some folks will say...yecch....its itb.....but.....theres some pretty discriminating types on the reaperforums that seem v happy with it.

I second the opinion of change mic/position rather than EQ when tracking. I guess you need to have a good look at the future, if you ever plan to get a console some time down the line. Your outboard EQ's could become surplus to rerquirments or certainly used a lot less.

It's a personal view only but I like to spend money on mics, pre amps and compressors now and use ITB EQ's. IMHO I think plugin compressors generally suck but there are some very usable plugin EQ's I do plan to get a console for the studio in the near to mid future though.
