Max/MSP

Hey guys,

I'd like to get into Max/MSP or something similar like Csound. Can anyone recommend any text books or tutorials that might help me get started? I have experience with programs like reaktor, but very little with pure coding etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
ryan

That is a good book if you're interested in developing interactive music composition software. Although considerably outdated (Max only, not MSP), it's very simple to follow, even for Max MSP novices. Nevertheless, I think that with the tutorials (really follow them all the way through, several times if needed!!!), the excellent online forums at Cycling'74 and the ever increasing number of patches floating around on the web, you can easily get the same results by yourself in a few months, learning perhaps more in the meantime.

You may also want to check PureData (kind of free MaxMSP), SuperCollider (really powerful), Plogue Bidule (a bit less so) and all the graphical interfaces for Csound.

Good luck!

As has been mentioned previously, the Max/MSP tutorials from Cycling '74 are quite useful. I had to go through them in an undergraduate computer music course, and it was all I needed to head down the right road. However, since Max and MSP are available separately, there are still two sets of tutorials. The Max tutorials will teach you how to program in the Max environment, and the MSP tutorials will teach you how to deal with digital audio. Since most folks are using some MSP objects in their patches, it would make sense for Cycling '74 to create a combined set of tutorials that teach both facets of the program side by side. Perhaps someone has done that already?

found it best to find someone experienced

to show you basic patches then try experimenting with your own idea's, alot of trial and error but in the end you get the hang of it.
