Anyone good with the price of second hand gear?

Hey Dudes,

A friend of mine is selling up his studio and moving abroad, and is looking to sell most of his gear off second hand. Only thing is he has no idea what it's worth! Anyone got any ideas? (btw this is for the UK so only need price in £££s)

His setup is:

Protools system:
Mac G4 Dual 1.25Ghz 1024RAM
HD Core card and Expansion Card (Does this make it an HD2 system?)
2x 192 analogue/digital 16in out units

Microphones:

1x RE20
1x Beyer TG-X80
1x Beyer M88
3x SM57
1x D112
1x Audio Technica AT4040
2x Audio Technica AT4033a
1x Audio Technica ATR30
1x SM58
1x Audix D6
4x MD421II
2x AKG SolidTube

I'm only after an overall figure for the protools rig and overall figure for the mics, as i don't think the guy can be bothered to sell each bit separately.

Any help wud be much appreciated!

get an ebay account then do searches for each item under completed listings and you'll know the ballpark sale value

That site hasn't been updated in 2-3 years and is hopelessly out of date for most of the gear listed there.

If in good condition...61.8% of the current retail is a good guide..

Thanks guys.

I've tried the ebay idea for the mics but been having trouble finding the protools gear on there.

I believe it's all in good condition so might just go with the 61.8% of retail idea!

Ebay is definitely the best source for the going price on used gear. That aside, I would say that 61.8% (was he joking around a little with the odd #? ) is a fair price. There are some items though, that go for more like 91.8% and this is something I simply don't understand. Why someone would pay $50 less than new for a Distressor is beyond me...pay almost new and get no warranty or mfr/dealer support?? Whatever...each to his own I suppose. Personally I would be hard pressed to pay much more than 75-80% of new for a used item, and I would feel kind of crummy asking more than that in a listing. That's just my take on it though. I actually see people paying more than retail in some Ebay auctions, which is simply indicative of how auction bidding machismo can get in the way of sensibility.

I know 61.8% sounds a little odd..but it is spookily accurate when it comes to ebay sales for a lot of gear (check it out!)..it happens to be the Golden Ratio btw..

I agree though that with really high end gear things can be different..especially with rare & boutique stuff..

I'm in Germany, and I mostly look for mics, and a lot of what I see goes for between a third and half the retail price, like Neumann SDCs or other things. I personally wouldn't really pay more than 60% of the retail price for ebay stuff...

For some items, I've seen enormous differences, like single Sennheiser MKH 50s going for prices between 350 and over 800 (!) Euros... Unfortunately, none at 350 recently..
