I have the B4 plug and a real B-3 rig. Positives: the B4 sounds pretty damn convincing, you can quantize your performance, and you don't have to mic up a cabinet... Negatives: it is not nearly as three-dimensional or punchy as a real B-3. It can get washed out in a big mix. Overall, a great tool for three hundred bucks... but it doesn't replace an ace player with the real thing...

Have you ever tried re-amping a B4 track?

b4+distressor+api550a=95% of real B3 especially to tape I have a 69 e-167 hammond, and my buddy keeps his B3 at my studio. So I have 2 real hammonds at the studio at my disposal. I find myself cueing up b4 almost all of the time. We dont keep the real organs going very much. Alot of times they sounds scratchy and odd. Sometimes they work nicely though. But if you have an organ player that knows what he's doing, you are going to fool 99% of the people that listen, especially in a mix. They key to making the b4 the most convincing is putting a slight delay on the leslie. You can tweak how long it takes the leslie to get going. Real leslies don't react instantly. So when you tweak it to act like a real leslie, you are getting pretty damn close. I really love b4 |

I've had opportunity to play both B4 and Charlie. While B4 is much more flexible, I ended using Charlie due to it's sound. Charlie sounded fat without any external box. I haven't had chance to try B4 with leslie (or similar rotating cabinet). Still believe that B4 probably gets it's kick only when amped. Charlie has the sound, but it is very preset-ish. It has a lot of presets and I ended browsing through them to find suitable sound. When you want to finetune chosen preset, you'll find it's editing is very limited. But it sounds...huh! One great thing I did with Charlie is that I used preset with rotor motor's hum noise and played it through midi alongside an organ patch from Motif 7 keyboard. Motif had suitable sound for my song but felt unreal, kind of plastic character , too polished. So I used this hum noise to make it more real. It kicked a**!!! If I had budget, I'd buy Charlie and go through yellow pages to pick some Gem, Eko Tiger or similar low-budget "copy" of Hammond. That would cover all types of organ sounds. Unfortunately, my budget for now has other priorites... |
