Drum riser, worth a try?

I read somewhere on the net, can't remember where that MDF on car tyres works as a good drum riser. A good friend of mine owns a taxi firm and has loads of old tyres so I could get hold of some easily. Anyone tried this?

I'm a pretty handy carpenter so making a specific frame would be simple for me but this sounded like a neat solution that is easily removeable and I could stack the tyres up outside.

Sounds real cool, actually. I assume it's some kind of surface to sit on the tires, but what exactly is MDF?

Medium Density Fiberboard

I made drum risers with 3/4" plywood and Shep-tube. Shep-tube is the round concrete pouring pre-form used for pouring concrete pillars. You can cut it to desired length and it is light and easy to transport. I've also used plywood cut to form into an "X" (inspired by waterbed support systems) for legs. Also easy to break down and transport, easier to find, but heavier to carry.

I don't have pics of the Shep-tube riser but I do have these:

My idea is isolation from the floor because my CR and drum room will sit on the same joists. So...
A 2x4 frame 5 feet wide and 8 feet long (or a single sheet 4x8 which may be a tad too tight for some kits, but a simple extension piece would be fine too)
with MDF or whatever on top. Make 4 or more legs out of a short piece of 2x4 and cut the ends to a point where there is hardly any surface area touching the floor, and set those on rubber matting to firthure reduce coupling to the floor. Stuff the underside full of rockwool or OC703 so that you dont ahve a big assed diapragm instead of a riser. There ya go.
The tire idea seems like it could be a hair too spongy, maybe letting the mics or drums move around too much, or maybe if the drummer is a fat ass it'll make the drum riser uneven when he sits down. It does sound like it would work though.

By the way, the whole "tyre" thing cracks me up. I looked and saw "Wales" and it all made sense... I think its funny on TV shows they say AL-You-MIN-Yum instead of aluminum. Cracks me up.
Try the "tyre" idea though and see if it works and let us know!
