Vintech 609ca Drum buss/mix buss duties

Before anyone says the obvious....yes I did do a search and there is not that much info on this unit ,so I thought i would try one more thread.............I need a good quality comp that will equally live on the drum buss and the 2-buss.I currently own a Smart C2 and a Avalon 747 which usually sits on the mix buss and a Meek sc2 that is used on the drum buss, The majoriaty of my work is the indie market. I know there is alot of Vintech bashing here so I would like to hear from people that have had some experience with this unit.....other contenders are TF Pro38 and a API 2500. Thanks for any input!

Never tried the Vintech, but the Api is a great unit. I would have bought one right away except that I couldn't justify the price for only 2 db of gain reduction on the mix buss.

Good luck

How does the amount of compression figure into the dollar value?

The Vintech sounded a little lean compared to my 33609JD.

Geoff Tanner has a new box coming out..
loads of cool features..
well beyond Neve 2254/33609 funtionality and from what i heard at AES ,cool sounds too.

Don't know when they'll be avialable though.

Roundbadge.....what do you mean by a bit lean sounding.....thinner sounding.........does the vintech unit have the Neve sound of your 33609 or is it not even close sonic wise.........Where can I get more info about Geoff Tanners comp coming out.......I want to keep the price down to the 2-3K max range........................Anybody out there using the TF Pro P38....seems like a great deal if it is a top notch comp.

I wanted a mix buss compressor that could do some serious compression, as well as subtle. For me, the API only did subtle. When I hit it harder I started hearing the compression too much. So I couldn't justify it's functionality for it's price.

So I chose the 1968ME cuz it was A LOT cheaper and I could get up to 5db of transparent compression. I don't LOVE the tone of the 1968, but for me, it works really well.

I think the Vintech sounds significantly thicker through the lows and midrange than the original Neve 33609. It's not even a subjective difference. I'm not saying the Neve is thin...but they have a very different tone than each other. The Neve sounds fast and crisp, relatively clean with a peak around 8khz; while the vintech was more like a 2254 tone with 33609 controls, very colored and with an obvious bump in the lows and softening of the mids.

I think 1db should be no more than $1000. Anything over that is tough in the calculations!
