Thread Starter | Peluso P28 impressions?
Okay, there has to be someone out there that has tried the Peluso P28's in a session setting by now. I'm getting frustrated with what I've been using for paired overheads (Neumann KM184's or Shure SM81's). When I freelance I've used everything from B&K, Schoeps, Telefunken, Neumann, and Gefell. My favorites have been a OH pair of the original vintage tube 221b's for SDC's but it's not something I have the money for. I tend to quad my OH mics, a pair of SDC's for close overheads and my pair of Neumann/Gefell CMV563's (m55k omni caps) for OH room. It's always been an issue of the closer OH mics. The 563's get plenty of the room and a lot of top end so I'm looking for a pair of close OH mics to fill in the mids. I thought about either getting another pair of 563's with M7 lolli-caps or, a pair of the RED Type A tube mics with the R7(B7) caps. But in either of those cases, I'd be spending at least $1400 per mic plus optional capsules and/or dual/single mic PS. I also really like the tone of the 563 with an M7 cap for drums... but I'm looking at the bottom line here. I want to save as much money as I can. If the Peluso P28 is anything close to the 221b, I'd be very happy. I haven't tried the Josephson C42's or the Peluso CEMC6, but my understanding is both of those are kinda bright and/or not that much different than what I've already tried. The only other "ultimate" OH paired tube mics I like is the U67... and in some privileged cases, a pair of long-body U47's (albeit very neutral and better for room). To go back to my original question... what's the closest/furthest sound equivalent to the Peluso P28? I suppose I could "rent" a pair but I'm in the process of moving cross-country and I probably won't have a practical session for another several months. So basically, I'm trying to "ping" those that have tried the P28's against other high-end tube SDC's. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, -- Adam Lazlo

I recently purchased a P28 for the purpose of running through a Martech Pre to record classical/flamenco guitar. I have never used any of the Neumann mics you mentioned, but I have a pair of SM81's, and when comparing the two mics when applied to nylon string guitar, the P28 is much much more smooth than the SM81. Nice full lows, smooth highs. The SM81 truly sounds harsh and brittle in comparison. I want to find out more about the Peluso CEMC6 myself, for stereo mics.
