Absolute must-have Preamps...

Regardless of the kind of music one makes, PLZ list all the absolute must-have Pre's that belong in any studio's (home or pro) racks. Merci.

That's like saying 'What cars should I have in my driveway' without knowing what style of car you like, how fast you like to drive and how many people you want to carry.

That said, the quality stuff usually has this logo on it: (this is just a partial list)

API
Neve
Daking
Avalon
Chandler
Vintech
Great River

and the list goes on...

For my home setup. My kid uses that studio more than I do.

I believe it was J. Paul Getty who was asked; "How much money does it take to satisfy a man?" to which he replied; "Just a little more."

Hey 2,

the "rather should-haves" are a bit pricy, but definitly better than the "absolute must-haves".. Giv“em a try, especially to the broke series, terrific brilliance and long-time value!
Hihi

I prefer the "No Brainer" or the "Bang for the Buck".
Usually good deals on those

LOL!

To parlay that into an auto-racing analogy:

"Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?"

Langevin AM16s (not the new bought the the name variety)
Re furbished or newly made RCA or ALTEC designs with stackable pads and phase invert, anything new that sounds good and doesn't cost your left nut (millennia HV-3D8) 8/3750=470 a channel. Some guys are just tres droll (or is it cul).
Anyway, pres without mics. or an ear to guess where to put them ain't worth much anywhere except e-bay so you better start asking some more kwestshuns.

Ying and Yang

I like to divide things into two groups. Can we agree that it would be nice to have something on the fat side, Neve like.

And it would be nice to have something on the clean side, APIish, to catch the transients.

I am looking for a partner to my 1272. A Hardy is one candidate. But what about that Pendulum? Any others?

Oh yeah, an another side topic. Shouldn't you get preamps in pairs so you'll always have the option of stereo?
