images - DIY broadband panels made of hemp

first phase of my sml project is done, i covered my ex-balcony-turned-vocal-booth in broadband panels, using 12 and 18cm thick hemp panels (based on a great idea by airmate posted on this thread a few months back). i bought the hemp from the same manufacturer.

i've designed a simple frame in photoshop, but had a carpenter build/mount them for me. idea was to have it as open it can be, so it absorbs from the sides too, and allows the sound to pass direct to the wall. another reason for this was to make them as light as possible, allowing easier mounting, and possible re-location/portability if i move. two panels on the windows are removable, so when no recording takes place they sit on the floor to the left. i still need to make a removable panel for the door too, its waiting for the new PVC door.

Awesome. Rockwool irritates the shit out of my skin so I will look into this in future builds. Also, how many studios can say they are MADE out of weed?

DIY. a frend and me took the 734 design form the bbc papers to a guy with styrofoam cutting company. its denser than standard, at about 30kg/m3. i painted it with the same paint i used for the room.

no its actually more expensive than any OC, or other fibrglass, mineral wool solution. one 120x60x18 panel cost me arround 19eur, plus (on larger quantity) about 20% on top for shipping. i shipped 4.5 cubic meters. total cost arround 930eur.

however, these hamp panels contain absolutely no quartz, no glass, and acoustical properties are very good. the room really feels dead, but not hi/mid dead only, but thruout the spectrum, lower panels have frk, upper ones do not. and the 734 diff give me slight presence arround 3 - 4k, but they are removable in case i want to put another hemp panel instead. in general i left a few things flexible/removable, so i can change the sound a bit, depending on application.

had my first VO session yesterday. speakers and clients pleased. so far, i'm happy.

I find it difficult to believe that lining your room with hemp will attenuate your highs.

and boy are my arms tired, etc

Looks like a great idea; I was one itchy fellow after mounting my DIY Roxul absorbers. They're fully wrapped and everything, but I'm still paranoid that I'm breathing microscopic bits of that stuff in all day. Hooray for organic!

looks really nice and clean. and I hate rockwool, no matter how safe it's supposed to be.
One question: Is your trap fireproofed? does it meet firehazard regulations?

thanks

This is a good question. The pinhole burns on my vinyl carseats is evidence enough that this material comes from a fairly flammable source.
