The Hofner Bass has a lot to do with the sound as well....very midrangy bass without a lot of punch or sustain.

thanks for the replies so far. pretty sure the short scale höfner bass with flatwounds is a factor.

the frantone bassweet fuzz seems good....a little too pinchy though i think from what i've seen on youtube.

i did some research and the guyatone fuzz tzm5 comes pretty close.

any other suggestions are welcome.

Hey there! I look up things on gearslutz all the time but this question has prompted me to finally take a second and sign up.

This is Ed from Deerhoof. The pedal we used for that is a Shoe Pixel Fix. The bass does definitely add to it. The flatwounds and that bass always sound great. I was barely touching the strings and cutting the notes as short as I could to give each note some space. That pedal is actually on several tracks on the new record and we use it live right now as well. Hope that helps!

ed, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply to this thread...it's pretty fascinating to get this info directly from you! been loving all of your guy's sounds for a number of years now. studio or diy...it's always refreshing listening to your releases and attending your shows.

this new bass sound really stood out...it's really pixely =D...the pedal seems great. it makes the bass notes sound kind of like an old motorcycle...great sounds.

now i just need to find a place to buy it.
whatever i end up doing..it's already inspired me tons.

EDIT:
i just found SHOE Pedals on facebook. apparently he takes orders via facebook.
