Thread Starter | Amps - Help?
Hey, this is my first post here.
I play in a upcoming rock band in style of Underoath, A Day To Remember, Taking Back Sunday etc.
We will be gigging alot soon and I need a new amp for this. I believe a Orange could handle it but maybe even better with a tubescreamer to tight up the bass a little.
I know Tim from Underoath used a Orange Rocker 30 with a JCM800 and I believe James used a Orange AD140.
The AD140 is not within reach for my budget. Though I could get a AD30 or Rocker 30 used, if 30w is loud enough.
The Peavey 5150/6505 also seem to be a popular choice in these kind of bands...
I don't really know guys, any recommandations?
/Simon.

I play an AD30 at my local practice studio and it is loud enough through a 4x12 without question. One of my fav amps! I also have a 6505+ at home ha!
They're both completely different though so be aware of that. If I had to choose one to do it all out of what you talked about I'd pick the Peavey since it's got some great tones in it and it's reliable as f**k. Had it nearly 6 years now, never replaced a tube and I continue to abuse it.
Orange are sonically amazing from my experience but a little more temperamental (nowhere near enough to be a deal breaker). See if you can try a couple and pick the one you like best. Don't just stick to Orange or Peavey, there's loads of great sounding higher gain amps out there!

Ive read that the AD30 is more of a vintage sounding Orange, maybe the TH30 would be a better option. Its made in China but it has plenty of gain.

Got a TH30, great sounding and loud little amp. Much quieter in terms of hum/hiss than the 5150 combo I used to own. That's the direction I might try. If you have few extra bucks, get an Orange 412 and stock with real Fane speakers (part of the original Orange sound and LOUD as hell)!

I'll agree with drbob and take an Orange 412 cab. They're built like tanks and sound fantastic no matter the speaker you put inside or head that's on top of it. They just suit everything so well. Love them!
There are so many great amps out there for the kind of money you're talking. Even more if you're willing to buy used. The best thing you can do is get off the internet and drag your favorite guitar around to all the amps you can find. That's how I found the 6505+. Before that I was using a Mesa Triple rec which don't get me wrong, is amazing. I just prefer the peavey as to me, it's everything I want in an amp.

I am sure a lot of people will cringe when I say this but... Look on ebay for all the different countries in Europe for a used Axe FX Standard or Axe FX ultra. Order a Matrix power amp direct from England. Put it all in a 3 or 4 space rack and smile when you carry your whole rig that weighs 10 kilos and set it on top of your Orange 4x12. Get any vintage or modern sound you want at any volume you want. Want an Orange sound? No problem. Want a Recto sound? No problem. Run direct to the PA out of the second pair of outputs. Smile when it takes you 3 minutes to pack the rig up and go home. Let the flaming begin. |

Thanks guys! Yeah I really like the Orange cabs too, I will get one.
Haha, an Axe FX wouldn't be wrong either! But i've decided to go for the TH30, it suits my needs perfectly.

I can see myself selling my home for one of everything they do. I don't think you can go wrong with a bright orange Orange!
Funny how they kind of passed me by. I guess I always thought of them as a gimmick for the bright colours but who cares when they sound that good eh?

yea 30w will be fine. 30 watts of valve power is still a lot of power.
You'll have less headroom but for a high gain sound, it'll mean you can ride the power tubes for gain instead of the preamp tubes which will sound nicer IMO.

With most modern venues, 30w is all they'll let you crank. And amps sound so much better turned up! You'll mic it for bigger stages and use monitors if you have to. Heck, even Aerosmith was using 30w Gibsons for a long time and they play fairly big venues.

The Carvin Mini V3 is affordable and very versatile. They offer a money back trial so you can try it at your home. CarvinWorld.com International - Guitars, Amplifiers & Pro Audio
I tried it at the Carvin factory in San Diego, a very nice little amp, plenty of power to gig with, just get an amp stand that gets your speaker up behind your head, that will make it very loud.
Good luck and good music to you

Will I have to change tubes more often if I got to crank the amp to the max?

Still, a good set of tubes should last you at least a year. Depending on the type of tube, how it's used in the circuit, and usage habits, some tubes could last for 50 years or so.
