what is a speaker cab and can you have multiple in at different ohms

What is there to a ext speaker cabinet other than a 1/4 jack and a speaker/s?
Ive always used combos of some sort and wanted my brother to make me an ext cab for my little 4 ohm amps. if we get a proper matching 4 ohm speaker can we just wire the speakers and jack? or is there more to a extension cabinet other than types of wood..open/closed back etc? also has anyone ever had two jacks and 2 different ext speakers for different ohms?
