To any clonewheel grinders out there...

This might be somewhat of a long shot but I’ll ask anyway…

Is there anyone out there that has a Motion-Sound R3-147 rack mount leslie (I have one) and has compared it to a Neo Ventilator or a Strymon Lex? It’s a bit of a rare bird as MS stopped making them several years ago.

I’ve seen the various vids on Youtube etc, on the Vent and Lex, but as I can’t get my hands on either one locally to test/compare directly to the R3-147, I’m throwing it out here to see if anyone else has.

I’m using a Hammond XK-1 through the R3-147 (as well as a Motif ES) It’s a definite improvement over the sims in both and the tube pre in the R3-147 helps as well.

The R3-147 is/was a great solution to lugging a 122 around, but now that these stomp box sized solutions are available, it’s obviously very tempting to go that route. I’m more interested in comparing overdrive characteristics of the pedals than the actual spin sim.

Unless you will miss the 3-D image of a living breathing Leslie in a room, the Vent is a great Leslie sim.

I won't miss the real deal much when playing live. I have a stereo monitor rig for live use. Don't miss moving a big leslie, that's for sure. Usually playing loud hard rock, so the leslie gets drowned out to some degree anyway. I don't even hit the fast spin that often. More of a growly rhythm instrument approach most times, which is why I'm interested in comparing the overdrive capabilities of the Vent and Lex to what I'm currently using.

I have a Motion Sound LowPro/Pro3T and bought the Vent a year ago. I have not looked back. The strengths of the Vent are the overdrive and the cabinet simulation. Hearing is believing. Check out this video:

Thanks delaware dave. The overdrive and and cab sim is the key for me as I like some good ol' bite without that somewhat brittle hi-end the R3-147 produces when you start driving it pretty hard. Overall, with a little bit of overdrive from the XK-1 and a little bit from the R3-147, it sounds much better than the built-in leslie sim, but the sheer portability of a Vent is making this look like a no-brainer.

I occasionally play with a guy who uses the Ventilator. That thing sounds amazing. It's not just the horn sim that sounds great, the overdrive in it is right, too.

There's finally some local stock of Ventilators in town, so I'm going to nab one for a couple days and do a hands on A/B against my current setup.

Just trying out a Ventilator for the first time with an XK-1. The overdrive is a big improvment. Warm and growly, not harsh. Adding just a tad of XK-1 overdrive adds a nice subtle bite which makes it even better. I'm liking it.

Using the fast spin on my Motion-Sound R3-147 imparts an airy quality which I kinda like, and having the MS Gas Pedal gives me infinite speed control. The Ventilator isn't as flexible in that regard, but I'm liking the overall improvment in tone. Running both at once might be interesting.
