Thread Starter | Bare Knuckle Pickups
Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone here has messed with the Bare Knuckle 'the mule' pickups. Specifically in a les paul. I have been listening to youtube clips for days and seems that these have been the most consistent in impressing me. I'm playing the stock 498's right now and really am just sick of them. They seem so bland to me.
I'm looking for something with les fizz in the top with higher gain settings. My uncle had a paul with Tom Holmes PAF pickups and I loved the sound. The BKP's seem to be the closest I have heard to those.
Any input? Other suggestions?
Genre could be considered hard rock, but I don't buy so much into cliche high output/high gain sustain/fizz for days sound that most of my peers play with.
Thanks!
Neil

I haven't tried the Mule but I have a lot of Bareknuckles and the quality is very high. The lowest output humbuckers I have are a VHII set which is great. I also have nailbomb, miracle man, painkiller and a custom made humbucker.
I'm pleased with them all.
The clips on the website give a very good guide to the tone so if you like what you've heard of the Mule if say go for it.
If you have any doubts you should email or call them. Tim is very helpful and his customer service is top notch.

Thanks dudes. They are quite pricey, but I haven't found anything besides the Tom Holmes (just as expensive and long lead times) that sound close to what I want to hear.
Thanks again.

Bare Knuckle pups made my LP Custom a keeper, finally, after several other highly regarded pups failed to impress.

Best PUPs around! They will definitely make you improve your technique and expose your weaknesses.. I figured their samples online had to be doctored somehow because they sounded so much better than the comparisons tracks, however, after installing them, I quickly found that those samples were accurate. I was glad I spent the extra cash.

Sent from my MB860 using Gearslutz App | I agree! I deliberated for a long long time, even in the shop after i had made up my mind and went with a set of Miracle Mans (men!). Really happy with them! I now interested in getting a set of the Rebel Yells as well. For anyone interested, I did a little review and video review here.
i just have to start practicing my Zakk Wylde Licks now!!
I should add they have been added into a Basswood Ibanez, I was worried that they might be a bit bright. But it fully compliments the guitar (I guess I was looking for a bright midrange anyway!)

My miracle man set is in a basswood ibanez too. Much fatter than the stock pups. The neck pickup has a great jazz tone too, not what you'd expect from a neon yellow superstrat.

Keith Merrow recently did a shootout with Barenuckles and Duncans in the same guitar playing metal. I greatly preferred the Duncan Distortion as well did others. BKP's are alright but they are relatively drier pickups imo.

What model duncan? What model Bare Knuckle? I'm not playing metal.
Can you link the shootout?
I only ask, because in the lengthy scouring about pickups, this is the first negative press I have seen. Not doubting you. I just would like more info.

Have to say, since hearing Bare Knuckles I find that Seymour Duncans and EMGs are not my thing. I have a Fernandes Ravelle (Dave Kushner Sig model) and I took out the stock Seymour Duncan and had a Rebel Yell fitted. The Ravelle is quite Les Paully, so maybe that's another model to consider (the other pick-up I've been considering is the Crawler, although they're for my Fender guitars).
Really you just have to try them though, but I'd say you'd be hard pushed for find a bad model, and you'd always get a good resale price.
But yeah, hand-wired in the UK doesn't come cheap.

another pickup to consider is Lindy Fralin pickups, Lindy is an old school pickup designer that makes pickups that you can pick in 5% degrees of hotter than stock, In my opinion he makes the best Fender style pickups and very nice humbuckers and P 90's

I am am not intending bad press at all on BK pickups. They are good pickups but I am not sure they are twice as good for twice the price as Duncans.
I preferred the tone of the Duncan Distortion on this vid. The Warpig was my second favorite. 7 String bridge pickups- Bare Knuckle and Seymour Duncan, high gain comparisons (rhythm) - YouTube |

Here's a question for anyone who's tried them both-
I'm hoping to get a Les Paul in the new year and the first mod will be a pair of BKPs.
The generally recommended set by my (trusted) local repair shop are the Mules. How do the Black Dogs compare to them? I'm guessing that Black Dogs have a Jimmy Page influence, by the name (am happy to be corrected!).
Sounds I'm mainly looking for are chunky neck (think Brown Sugar, but fatter) and a range of bridge sounds- from that JP barking rhythm tone (Custard Pie) and nice chiming clean sounds to Joe Bonamassa's lead tones on Song of Yesterday.
Recommendations?

I'd wait til you get the guitar first, get to know it's acoustic character. Two Les Pauls with the same pickups won't sound the same.
You can also try the BKP forum, I used to hang out there alot myself, very friendly and knowledgeable bunch. A lot of JP and Bonamassa fans there too, so they should be able to put you in the right direction. https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php |

I got a set of BK's about a month ago for my R7 (Riff Raff - Bridge, Mule - Neck) and really wasn't happy at first. I installed new pots, caps and switch and I'm much happier now.
The Mule was really choked until the wiring change but seems to have opened up nicely now. I say seems because I logged on here having just finished the wiring install and check out.
I'll try to post back in a few days with a little more detail.

Bkps can be very sensitive to height so try adjusting that to see if it helps.
