The Unofficial P-90 Soapbar Love Thread

I've been checking out a bunch of different guitars with P-90's the last few weeks
and I am totally sold on how great they sound.

The lows are warm and woody without turning to mud and the highs are both warm and crisp and musical without getting shrill.

What's so amazing is that some of the stock MIK P-90 soapbars are sounding better
overall than some of the finer HB's.

My neighbor picked up this cool little St. Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster with 2 P-90's
and both of us were blown away that this little guitar sounded better than all three
of his very nice Les Pauls.

Also waiting to get my hands on one of the Fender P-90 equipped Thinline TC-90's
Interesting that this Fender has a set neck too. MIK but with a street price of just under $600.00

A/B'ed against his Tele, the P-90's were much more musical overall
with plenty of twang in the top end, but without being so shrill.

Most noteworthy was how responsive they were to guitar settings and pick attack.
They were also considerably hotter than his Shaw HB's in his Les Pauls
without sounding harsh at all.
And mind you again, these were stock MIK P-90's

Just trying to imagine how great a guitar might sound with Fralins or other upgraded P-90's

Totally sold on P-90s for sure!

I have a 62 LP JR and a 75 LP pro deluxe and P90's are king.
Best pickups ever made in my opinion. Next on my list is an ES330
Something more subtle yet raw with P90's over humbuckers in my opinion.

I already tried my friend's St. Blues and a PRS with these MIK P-90's and both were
really responsive.

What interests me about the Fender is the Semi-hollowbody construction with the set neck.

Dunno about Fender MIK quality but the TC-90 looks nice.

Agreed, would love a nice old Casino or ES-330, but prices are going nuts.

Cool custom guitar there with P-90's but not sure why they built the guitar with them so close together.

Because they're wired together like one big humbucker.

I have an Ibanez Joe Satriani model with P-90s. I don't really like Ibanez guitars, I don't really like Joe Satriani, so I definitely don't like both at the same time - but my neighbor brought me this thing that had 90s in it and it's killer! It's really a monster sounding guitar. Like if a Strat had real balls, it's great. Nice and crunchy with good clarity!

I have an LP Special double cutaway w/ P90's. Neat guitar but its always been hit or miss with me. Seems to be best suited for that slightly distorted sound. Any more and it gets really noisey.

Well really my favorite looking P-90 based guitar is the '65 White SG Special, but
the real deal is running $7500.00+ and the re-issues are almost $2300.00

That's just plain nuts! Or is it?

Also found a Black '56 Les Paul Special Dead mint NOS mind you, with all the case candy
ONLY $63,000.00 Sheesh!

I was also looking at the USA built Fender Tele Jr's released around '94 and they've gone crazy too.

They are also set neck construction like the TC-90 only with a more conventional
Tele body cut

PRS and Music man make a few rather nice affordable P-90 models too.
The McCarty Karina, Tremonti Single Cut and SE Soapbars

Musicman also makes the Axis Super Sport which looks pretty good, but I haven't had a chance to try one.

Wouldn't that look so nice under the tree with all the other Christmas decor?

There's a few more conventional looking Tele Jr's out there, but they are still through
the neck construction with average prices I'm seeing around $1800.00

Grosh makes a few nice P-90 models and I've seen a few nice Robin Guitars and
Hamer makes a few beauties too.

Easy to find someting from the Squire Tele @ $249.00 all the way up to $5000.00+

Kinda with you there Big C !

I try to keep my nice guitars in pretty good shape, but it's hard to keep a workin' man's guitar looking all spiffy and stuff.

It's one thing when you're just buying a display guitar as an investment vs.
one that can handle blood sweat tears and beers.

It really is a shame that so many FINE guitars are just being bought up
by collectors who never plan to take them anywhere.

I just got a 69' Sg Special with P-90's and man; one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. Clarity with punch.

I'm really fighting the bug to buy something.

For better or worse from the cheapest to the sublime, they all sound great.

I've played several $400.00 MIK offerings and while the electronics could stand upgrading and the necks may not be ideal, they still sound great.

Not often that you can get one guitar that can start out sounding good and only
have to make a few mods to make it sound great.
