The tip on using vocoders for electronica basslines reminded me of a good trick I used to use.
Take a vocoder (any vocoder.. doesn't need to be a great one - any freebie plugin will work).. stick the vocoder on an FX send and try sending different things to the carrier and modulator inputs, not just the typical synth/voice pairing..
Try sending the bass as a carrier, and the drum submix as a modulator.. or guitar as a modulator to the drums.... you get some interesting rhythmic results that can be mixed in as some added flavor to your tracks.
Give it a try and you'll remember why you thought vocoders were so cool 20 years ago when you first played with one.
