| pT2-500-D Ribbon Mic Pre I recently had a chance to compare some 500 series pre-amps specifically marketed toward ribbon mic users. The True Systems, much to my satisfaction, was the unexpected winner. Though it has less EQ features than its competitor, what it has is just right. As promised, the gain is ample and quiet. I found that the HPF was voiced just right to bring out the clarity in a strummed acoustic part.
For electric bass through the instrument input, I found it laying between the Great River and API instrument inputs. The top was a little more defined than the API but lacked a little of the API midrange beef. The True was a little brighter sounding than the Great River, which has what I consider a perfect blend of girth and definition. It could be that the PT2 is more accurate, but not as shiny as the Great River. The sound, however, was good and would sit nicely in a mix.
Overall, I'd say the True PT2 is definitely a worthwhile addition to the lunchbox. It fills in a space (metaphorically and literally) between the API and Great River ends of the spectrum.
On a personal note, Tim at True Systems, is a really neat guy who knows what he's doing and took a lot of time to talk with me about his wares. |
