The R1 Active MKIII is a very cool mic that combines the best of two worlds; the warmth of a ribbon and the stability of a F.E.T. buffer amplifier.

Brilliant first ribbon mic

As my mic collection has been growing over the last few years, the time soon came to purchase a ribbon mic. Now, the ribbon mic market at this level is pretty saturated with choice. So, armed with reviews and a bit of email correspondence with dealers I managed to narrow it down to the Golden Age ribbons, in particular the active ribbon.

At the time, the active ribbon was perfect for my setup as I wasn't sure if my current preamps would have enough gain for a passive model. You're going to loose some of the "pure" ribbon sound because of this, but hey, this was my first ribbon and needed a place to start, without breaking the bank.

This mic is a wonderful character and with that, it doesn't suit everything. I've recorded female vocals, acoustic and electric guitar with this mic and so far it's been a welcome change from my limited stock of dynamics and LDCs. On acoustic guitar you can really mellow the high end and mechanical noise, such as picking and fretting noise, which is welcome in some productions, giving a very natural and balanced tone. Some female vocals work really well with this mic, perhaps for taking the edge of slightly shrill frequencies and once again, on electric guitars, the mic takes the high frequency harshness to a more mellow state. The sound of this mic was very easy to get used to and is very pleasing to the ear. The mic is also equipped with a 10db pad and a low cut, which are always welcome features on any mic.

My only concern with this mic is it's packaging. I'd happily spend a little more if it came with a hard case of some description. Instead it comes with a soft carry bag, which may not be suitable if you're planning on travelling anywhere with it. I bought a small flight case from Maplin to keep it safe, which wasn't too much trouble, but we do like nice packaging, especially if its going to keep our delicate ribbon mic safe!

If you want a mellow sound, or want to take the edge of a harsh guitar or string sound, then this could be the one to go to, especially if it's your first ribbon purchase and it's all your budget will allow. It's a smooth sounding mic which will always find a use somewhere along the line and there are no worries about having enough gain. This mic makes me want more Ribbon mics.

X2 - Great mics. I don't find any loss of character from it being active. I bought one and used it on a female soprano, acoustic guitar, and a fiddle session. Liked it so much I bought another and started using them around the drum kit. Nice price for a pair of stereo ribbon goodness! I really like to use one on the Hi-hat. Great fat mellow hi-hat sound! Can be really interesting on drum overheads too, and they take eq very well if you need to brighten up the cymbals. In a word I would describe them as "lush".

I don't mind the soft bags they come in. Makes it easy to hang them up so they are stored upright as they should be. A hard case may get stacked in a corner with the mic ending up in a poor position while not in use. The soft bag works well to slip over the top of the mic to protect it while storing it on the stand.

I take off a couple of points on ease of use because of the stand mount that they come with. It's not too bad, but can be awkward to get the mic positioned and the cable connected. It comes with a mic cord attached by clamp on the stand mount that I chose to remove. Any standard XLR cable will work and its easier to manipulate the mount with the factory cord out of the way.

Nice surprise!

I had a GAP mic shootout on my blog and want to let you know my impressions on the R1 active ribbon microphone from GAP.
The R1 comes with a very solid bag and a 2m XLR cable. It feels very solid and the built quality is promising. You can not use a shock mount with it and so you have to be pretty careful while recording, especially as it can produce a lot of "bottom". No stomping or jumping in the recording room...
To make a long story short: I love the R1. I did some quick vocal recordings and the R1 had a nice and warm character. The R1 is great on Bass and every source where you'd like to erase some higher frequencies. It has a bass roll off switch that can come in handy. It needs some phantom power but has a high output level and you don't need much gain from your preamp. Very nice.
Here are the samples:

I compared them to the CS-1 a large diaphragm condenser microphone and used several preamps.
I like the warmth of the R1 and the fact that it has a high output and very low noise.
