I really love this snare lots of ring and warmth it can be set-up to smack in a deadened voice but why? this thing is made to ring like a bell,
from Learn How To Play Drums with Video Drum Lessons

Being a 7-ply maple shell, the drum will offer a much warmer sound than others. The drum also falls under the Air-Seal System shell that Yamaha has boasted for some time. This means that the design of the shell offers a seal on both of the rims that traps the air in (except for the vent holes). This gives the drum much more of a controlled sound that can be heard much clearer then usual...... The drum has a great warm tone, but it lacks a bit on higher end cracks that I was looking for.

I like its warmth and thats what I wanted from it and while i agree it does not crack and snap like one might like I feel you have to pick your battles and every instrument is designed to do different things.

In the hands of a good player this thing can get a roll and wash that is impressive and dont get me wrong again with a good player this drum has depth and nuance complexity in the harmonics that mixed with good technique can provide an immersive sound.
I ended up giving to my drummer friend as he is amazing with it.
Overall I think its the most engaging tone and sustain I have heard in a snare but it is not about crack snap its more thwang and baaahhmmp if that makes any sense.

For recording I really like its tone if there was a downside it's that it really can draw attention to itself both in a good or bad way depending of course on playing style tuning and song , but it is a serious snare with a lot to say
