TAPCO SQUEEZ SQ2 By Mackie

Don't be thrown by this little gems sleek looks and totally professional vibe, it is in fact a total piece of junk.

The TAPCO Squeez SQ2 (By Mackie) is easily the most disposable '2 Channel Compressor' I have ever laid my sweet sweet hands on. It comes fully outfitted with a built in gate full range compression and a "Air" knob (Just in case the hum this bad boy lets off needs a little inaudible sparkle).

The 'auto release' function works amazingly well, it automatically destroys any signal you put through it. (I am confident this is exactly what the manufacturer intended so this was a complete success on their part.)

The Gate: Where do I start? I can't say enough about the gate on this unit. The Threshold/on/off knob is crafted from the best plastic China threw away. When you slowly turn the knob up (Remember ever so slightly on these knobs, a little bit goes a long way with these hyper sensitive professional puppies.) You will go from zero gating, to pretty much dead silence within a micron of an inch, huge time saver for me really, if I don't track the audio, I don't have to mix the audio, and lucky you it has TWO of these bad boy time savers!

The extremely hard to read Yellow text over Black paint is amazing because I don't want anyone seeing my settings, including myself, I can't be trusted to keep all my pro secrets secret.

Overall its a fantastic conversation piece and is sure to bring in pro talent when you add this to your public gear list. I've pretty much stopped using my distressors because they are too easy to get a solid dynamic from.

Pros don't take shortcuts.

I picked mine up for free, but I'm sure if you really needed one of these gems you could get ripped off for a solid 30 bucks on ebay.

Tapco Squeez SQ-2

I'm only throwing this review up here because I happen to disagree with the previous reviewer about the ways that the Tapco Squeez SQ-2 is a useless box of junk.

First off. The Tapco Squeez does "almost" nothing. I found the gate to actually work quite well. If you're in need of a 2-channel gate and you can get this for under $20 I have to say go for it.

The "air" knob is almost as bad as the "warmth" knob on a Behringer Tube Ultragain.

That said. The compression/limiting options really don't seem to do anything! And that's why I have to disagree with the original review on the "ease of use". I spent hours trying to figure out how to make this box do anything! Not very easy to use at all! The only time it changes your sound is when it makes sound worse. At its best performance it really sounds no different than when you press the Channel Bypass.

I really have to give this a "4" on features because if it did work properly this would be an amazing device that I would pay double the money for!

In conclusion: if you need a gate, grab it! It might also work well as preamp if you're hard up for a 2 channel preamp. As for the compression.. why, Tapco, why?

Post tapco squeeze

I have had a tapco squeeze for three years. I have used it with great results.I agree with the first reviewer in the fact that it is a very touch compressor. It does not have a good deal of head room on the output side but the compression levels you can get out of it can chance a lot. It reminds me of the compression a chameleon labs 7602 has. It is more about your specific taste. I use it on the input of my vocals and it can knock down the peaks on the vocals or slam it depending on the settings. I agree the air doesn't do alot but what do you expect for such a cheaper piece
