UAD Pultec EQP-1A plug-in equalizer

Equalization is the heart of mixing besides where you place the faders. If you have a great EQ you can add all kinds of sweetness to the sound of your tracks and it will make for an intangible that means all the difference in the world between bland and high quality. That being said very few analog equalizers are as famous as the original Pultec EQP-1A, for the very reason that it does the job by adding a very special sound to anything you pass through it. Unfortunately the original units cost several thousands of dollars per channel and remakes are not much cheaper. But in the world of ITB mixing there are several options that try to capture the sound of the Pultec. Universal Audio was one of the first major players to go all out and make a really competent Pultec emulation with their EQP-1A plug-in. But the question always arises: does it sound like a real Pultec? More on that in a minute.

The Pultec Pro plug-in is really two plug-ins in one that come with separate modules for the EQP-1A and the MEQ-5 midrange equalizer. I use both regularly. The controls are very simple (as with a real Pultec). You have a low shelving filter where you can boost or cut at set corner frequencies. There is a high peak boost, with variable bandwidth and finally a high shelf cut at selectable corner frequencies. With the MEQ-5 unit there is a low mid peak boost, a low mid to mid cut and a high mid peak boost, all at selectable, set frequencies.

IN USE

So does it sound like a real Pultec? Well I have heard and used a real Pultec and various analog copies of the original and I'd say that no the UAD version doesn't sound exactly like one. But it's close enough in sound that you get similar effects from the material you use it on in the mix as if you were using the real thing. With the plug-in there is a subtle lack of dimension and fullness as compared to the actual hardware. That's not really a problem if you're used to mixing ITB and aware of the usual differences between hardware and software emulations.

If you're fine with working ITB and accept the UAD Pultec on it's own terms it's a wonderful, characterful, software EQ. I find it great for fattening up a bass drum or bass guitar, for taming harshness on electric guitars, for adding a sense of vibe to an otherwise bland track and for making something sound a bit thicker and dirtier when it's too clean and thin. It's really a fine EQ. The drawback is that dialing in too much will usually result in mud. To avoid that is a matter of not using a Pultec on every single track and being careful about how you dial it in. But on the whole I like the sound of the UAD version and I find it goes a long way towards giving some vibe to ITB mixes. I highly recommend it.

Something special about the way this sounds. Not a transparent equaliser but rather one that imparts a certain vibe. Not too much to it, not at all like a surgical equaliser. I use it quite often a vocals, also great on bass guitar.

Smooth sounding EQ

The UAD Pulteq EQP-1A was included in the UAD-2 card when I made the purchase. Soon afterwards I got the Pulteq pro that included the MEQ-5 midrange equalizer. I use the Pulteq a lot in my mixes. The sound is very sweet and you can do massive boosts without making anything sound bad with it.
One thing one should be aware of is that when this plugin is activated it actually raises the volume by 1 dB. This is just a bug in the plugin but good to know because as we all know – louder sounds better.

I really like to use the Pulteq when I want to add some high end shimmer or to boost up the low end of a track. It just sounds really smooth. You have to be careful though because it is very easy to get carried away with it. The MEQ-5 section is great for cutting out low mud or perhaps boost some upper midrange growl on a bass guitar track.
On the EQP-1a you have a bandwidth control whereas the MEQ-5 has it fixed at 5. This plugin is one of the early UAD emulations and I have actually never used a real Pultec so I have no idea if it sounds anything like the real thing. I do however really like this plugin and it gets used all the time.

Pultec.. ths basic

I think I will write two reviews. One, when I’ve just bought my UAD-2 card and got this vst. Second, is now, when I own six of UAD eq’s and two more from other manufacturers.
1) Great Sound, nothing compare to this. At that moment my main alternatives were waves Renaissance Equalizer and T-racks. In A/B test, easily spot Pultec among other vsts. Its also very quick to adjust, meaning getting better sound quicker than ever.
The bass on this pulgin is a true beast, flavor that so nice to my ears.
2) Now, I’ve been using it just for a minor “fixes”. Comes after other UAD eq. Still, a strong eq that I’m using from time to time.
The best part of this vst, in my opinion, is the cost. The cheapest vst on UAD arsenal. Don’t understand why but I’m happy. I think that this is more suitable price for eq.
So, I’ve talked about the sound, how much I use this vst nowdays, the price and what else… oh right, the comparison between UAD pultec and other brands pultec.
Well, you can probably guess that right. Like the other vsts, the have different emulation, the UAD is by far more nice to hear and use. Save yourselves the time and money, invest in UAD plugins.

It's Just Ok....

In my experience, the Pultec is good overall once you learn how to use it and what type of materials it works well on. It's not a magic box so don't expect it to perform any magic where it's not suited.

Drumz/Base - It's good for mixing when you want a solid base and kick. At 20hz (slightly cut), kick is tight and thickned....Snare is open, clear, centered and solid when the high is put at 8K (slight broad band)... switching the frequencies (3k, 4k, 8k, 12k, and 16k) give a completely different sound even if there is no cut or boost... 16K being the most open sounding...8K perhaps the sweetest and forward sounding.

Not a big fan of this eq on vocals...I would go for the UAD Neve 1075 EQ for warm mids anyday especially on males vocals

not sure I use it on anything else....

For mastering - running an entire mix through it at the right frequnecy setting seem to add a bit of character and shimmer but the overall sound is not 3D(sort of thin) It does not have that roundness that perhaps the analogue version or the right anlogue gear will have. The IK T-Racks version of the Pultec however has more of that 3D huge sound space to it compared to the UAD version. In mastering, if I need to insert pultec for any reason, the T-racks version is what I would use. It's not as detailed on the high end as the uad but it has more fullness and rounded sound space/image that gives the master a fantastic feel for Pop/RnB/HHop type of music. I would put it at 20hz and cut slighly while bossting 12k slighly...

Overall UAD pultec is a tool that is very good to have handy for when you need that type of sound. I would advise getting the T-racks as well and use them interchngeably...u will end up liking and needing both becuae they don't sound the same on most materials.
