Realistic 33-1090A PZM

This review is for the Realistic PZM, this mic has an omnidirectional pickup pattern. The condenser microphone on is mounted a couple of mm high pointing towards it's metal body. So it's is slightly more directional than a run of the mill Omni. It uses a single AA battery is used to power it and it doesn't use phantom power. Unfortunately the output is a unbalanced Jack output connector but can easily be modified. There are many mods available around the net for a phantom power upgrade that also increases the spl.

I could't find a manufacturer (Radio Shack) data sheet. On the otherhand from using the mic I can tell you it is usable in a kick drum, bearing in mind the drummer is monster on the drums, so it can pretty much be used on most hi spl sources. The design is licensed by crown and does sound similar to their pzm so I've heard. Never the less it's a great mic with a pretty natural sound and is great for getting say an overall sound for a drum kit string section or used as a room mic but equally works well close up. It doesn't really have any weird frequency boost to colour the sound that much either.

All in all this microphone has excellent bang for buck and nothing in it's price range really comes close. You can pick these up for around £30-£50 depending on condition second hand as they have be discontinued.

I have read that you can make any mic into a boundry microphone simply by placing it or fixing it to a reflective plate.
I have not experimented, maybe a rubber band securely around a mic on a flat peice of metal?

The realistic PZM though very affordable, sounds good and is such a mic premade for such purpose.

I have used stereo pairs in a room that had nice acoustics and it really provided a nice overall image.
It does not seem to be a very colored mic in terms of response.
I have not used a crown PZM which this mic either is, -p48, or is based on depending on when it was made.
I have heard various iterations of the mics history and lineage and I don't know. The general point is that its a crown pzm minus some goodies xlr,p48.

As such it is a good pedigree for the price it goes for and with some mods can be even better.
I used the mic stock.

The inital reviewer talked about putting it inside a bass drum, I would not have done that but I am glad to hear it works!

It is a cool tool and having a pair mounted permanently on the walls can be an easy way to capture the room whenever you want.
Cool mic.
I have not had one in a few years and I don't recall the noise performance on them, but it wasnt that bad from what I recall.

PZMs have a hemispherical pickup pattern, not omni. The RS PZMs were made under licebse from Crwon, though some rearly models were apparently actually made by Crown.

Lots of accurate information on the web to add to the review, including how to use a different battery and different pre and balanced connectors, too.
