BAE 1073dmp

I purchased the BAE 1073 dmp in September of this year after some extremely positive experiences with other BAE products (namely - the 1073 module). For those that don't know, BAE is synonymous with top quality and attention to detail when it comes to faithfully replicating classic Neve hardware. They source all the original parts from the same factories as the classic consoles. They hand-wire them, and they make them in the US.

The 1073 DMP has the same Carnhill transformers and preamp as the 1073 and 1084, and all of them come with a Jensen DI transformer now for an unbelievably rich bass sound. It lacks the EQ section of the full 1073 (I would die for just a HPF), but has everything built into a handy little lunch pail format that lends itself extremely well to travelling. I have had great success with some location based recording with just an RME babyface, the 1073dmp, and a MBP.

In the studio, it's no slouch. The 1073 is my go to preamp of choice, and when I brought the DMP to a musicians project studio we ended up choosing it over a great river ME-1NV and a Daking 500 series mic pre one in an informal shootout before we recorded for the day. We tried the 1073dmp out against the Great River again a few days later slightly more formally with a few different mics and a few different singers/acoustic guitars in a well treated space and I still preferred the DMP for the guitars, and all but one of the vocalists. It's also slightly cheaper than the Great River.

In my studio I use the DMP as my second channel of Neve, and it is always what I use for bass DI. You can get more than enough gain with it for any microphone (even the quietest ribbon or dynamics).

Whether you're looking for classic Neve flavour on a budget, an amazing DI with a solid pre, or a portable solution for high quality recordings - look no further.

Pros:
Portable
Extremely small footprint
Amazing sound quality from both the preamp and DI.

Cons:
No HPF

BAE 1073DMP Desktop Mic Pre and DI.

We recently picked up a 1073DMP for our studio and as a smaller commercial studio focused on radio and TV advertising, we don’t have the space or the budget for a giant vintage console, so the DMP has been a great way for us to get some of that classic sound into our modern digital studio. BAE is known for recreating classic Neve preamps and eq’s and capturing that GIANT neve sound. It’s definitely been designed with musicians in mind. It has a “brick-style” desktop design with a built-in power supply and a small footprint. The DI has two thus so you can send to an amp and tuner at the same time. It is built with the same Class-A Mic Preamplifier used in other BAE 1073 modules and delivers a great VO sound. The DI is impressive, with a Jensen input transformer (the “Bootsy Mod”) It lets the lows come through like nothing I’ve ever heard before. During tracking sessions bassists always have to stop and ask, “What are you running me though?” and then say “This sounds amazing!” It’s quickly found its place here in the studio and has become my staple bass DI.
